TheEddie
This is becoming a little annoying, over the last few weeks I replaced both rear struts and mounts and also the driver side rear wheel bearing-it was making noise that increased relative to the speed of the car. For a while everything seemed fine but within the last couple of days the wheel bearing seems to be doing what it did before..slowly start to make noise and then get worse and worse. When i turn right hard it makes more noise than it does when I'm going straight and if i turn left it makes even less..Any idea what could be causing the bearing to go out besides maybe just a defective one?*Bought it from advance auto parts for 100 bucks. I can also see a tight bit of extra toe in on the wheel in question-getting a 4-wheel alignment soon but I dont think the alignment being off that tiny bit would do that much damage, am I wrong? Car: 1999 Monte Carlo LS 3.1 Thanks alot guys.
terryk2003
could just be a defective bearing, or you could have an alignment problem and its putting extra stain on the wheel bearing....i'd have it aligned after u replace the wheel bearing again... I think you better replace the wheel bearing before you get it aligned supposedly you are suppose to do an alignment after any suspension work...... Pontiac6KSTEAWD
As well with what is mentioned above, arent there bushings in the control arm links that could go bad? Have you replaced the upper strut mount when you did the strut? Just some other things to take a look at while you are under there..
TheEddie
I did replace both upper strut mounts when i replaced the struts so that isnt the problem. I am also planning on getting an alignment before I put a new wheel bearing in because if the alignment is hurting the wheel bearing, what good would it do to put a new bearing in while the alignment is off? Attack plan: 4-wheel alignment new wheel bearing quattro turbo my 3.1 :-)
cutlsp
uh..... it would be the better idea to replace the wheel bearing then get the alignment done. Not an alignment and then replace the bearing you would just be wasting your money by doing that.

I live about 15 miles from the nearest shop able to do 4-wheel alignments...

I would want to change the bearing and then get it aligned to be 100% certian that it won't be out of alignment from replacing the bearing AFTER getting it alinged. that is the point i'm saying is how can you be 100% certian you are not screwing up the alingment by replacing the bearing? TheEddie
negative, I think im just gonna end up changing the bearing and driving really gently/slowly to the shop..the alignment really isnt that bad, i see monte carlos with worse regularly so i'm beginning to think it was just a defective bearing...
