Hello everyone! First post!

Ok, I have a 88' Cutlass Supreme SL with the 2.8l (obviously) and as I go to crank it it cranks with minimum fuss, but hit the gas and, nothing. it's like it just dies down (but stays on for a while). I was told it's the MAP sensor, but I don't thing my car has one. Also, I need a tunje up but how in the hell do I get to the back 3 plugs? And another, is a 3800 engine swap straight-forward/cheap/a good idea? I want the same powerplant from a 98' Regal Supercharged 3800 in there. I can buy the egine out of one for $300! It only has 40,000 miles on it, compared to my 400,000+ miles on the 2.8l (what can I say, I like to travel!)

Yeah, if the vacuum line to the MAP is broken it will die out, or the sensor itself is busted, and with 400K miles, I would say the sensor is busted. Yes, the 3800 Series II S/C, referred to as the L67 motor, is a direct swap, you can use your stock motor mounts for the L67. The only hard part, is the wiring. And you will need the tranny that is used with the L67, cuz the one you have now, wont handle the power you would get from the L67. $300 is a good deal for a L67, go for it

I'm no expert by any chance...but doesn't the 88 have the MAF and NOT the MAP??? just what I thought... so how could it be the MAP?? but yah definetly go for the L67! that would be awesome!

88 doesnt have a MAT/IAT, the MAF takes the place of the MAT/IAT

The rear plugs are accessible after tilting the engine. You unbolt the upper mounts, insert a prybar into the passenger side engine bracket, pull towards you (helps to have the car parked facing downhill) then insert the drivers side mount bolt into the "slave" hole (middle of the mount)

Can't find a buddy to help you tilt the engine forward? Do like me, use your lawn mower. (the riding kind)

Ish..do I have to remove anything else besides the coolant bottle? Will everything just "tilt" with it? The problem with getting the L67 is to find a sucker er... mechanic who'll work cheap to help me get it out and to drop it in my Cutty. So do the harness doesn't bolt right up? Is there a kit or another harness that I can splice into the 2.8 harness to fit in the 3800's ECU?

No because if I'm not mistaken your injectors are not sequentially fired. I think yours are batch fired. Those would have a different computer compared to the batch firing. :) :)

Has anybody done this yet? Is there a definate guide to go by?

Plus you would need use the PCM from the L67, if Im not mistaken, its different from a ECM.

Also, how do you "read" the codes for the "Service Engine Soon" light? I know the first three flashes are to tell you that it's operating good, but what after that? The lights just keep repeating.

when I go the ECM page, it gives me that link I posted. Sorry.....

You have a MAF sensor (its the round plastic tube coming out of the air filter can with wires connected to it) and you can check it by tapping the little rectangle part where the wires connect lightly with the handle of a screw driver (with the car running). If the engine surges or stalls when you tap it the MAF is bad and the whole unit needs to be replaced.

Is your "service engine soon" light coming on while your driving or just when you start the car? If it just keeps fashing code 12 (flash, pause, flash, flash 3times) then that means the computer is not finding a problem. If it does code 12 3times then another pattern comes up write it down and check the list on this page for your code.
