Hey I did a search and came up with some info.....But thought I would throw this out and hopefully get some input.....my friend's sister has a 95 Lumina APV 3.8/4t60e. It also has torque converter shudder once it shifts into od. the q I have is to change the switch The side pan has to be pulled the switch has 6 or 7 wires on it. Is there a retaining clip or some method of holding it in place inside that pan?........And to change that switch does the trans have to be gone through? It looks fairly simple. Thanks for any input

I cant help you with the technical steps to do the job,but here is a great website to check out and you can even email them and they will perosnally answer your questions you have.

http://www.specialtytrans.com/

They gave me alot of advice before...also I have a 95 Olds minivan/4T60E with the same OD problem.Have someone pull the codes from the computer.I had a code P0740 TCC clutch failure. The check engine light never came on,the code was still stored in the ecm... had that bad shudder in OD,and was forced to leave it in D most of the time, even on the highways.

My van is in the shop as we speak getting it fixed under warranty. Its been plaguing me for 3 years back and forth into the shop for OD problems.

You're talking about the lockup solenoid...

I haven't changed one myself, but from what I understand it's a straight forward procedure - I know other people here have replaced it themselves before.

I have the same problem potentially, but I was led to believe it is normal. Can someone please elaborate on what happens? Like Explain the symptoms. Hey.....well what her van is doing is once it starts to shift into od or out of od it "shudders" real hard. or any time the torque converter locks up or unlocks it will "shudder" or vibrate heavily. I was told by a GM mechanic that as long as it lasts less than 8 seconds that it is the solinoid. Sounds plausible to me. If it is more than the 8 seconds or is more constant that it is prob. the converter itself. Her van has approx 135k. Trans has never been into. Now we did give it a new set of plugs/wires and it did help. Not quite the pooch that it was on Friday. But you would think that with a 3.8 that it would boogie a little better than it does. I hope this helps. If you need anyother info go ahead and e-mail me and I'll try to get you any more info that I have.

My Lumina when it goes into OD, the RPM drop to 1,500 approximately and you really have to get on it to even gain any rpm, or mat it to get it to downshift. Is this a problem? What fixes it? It used to buck, but the plug and wires fixed it. It just doesn't feel like I have power sitting there when it ''locks up''.

Hey Chad.

Well you might check on the lockup solinoid pressure switch. From what i have been told there are 3 of them in the pan on the side of the trans. At my local GM dealer they were about 15.00USD each. The TCC switch itself is about 70.00 USD. So as you can see we are going cheap first. Not to mention working on a APV is a royal pain in the ass. Hers is sluggish at low rpms. Almost feels like it is in "the wrong gear" Kinda like a stick when you start off in too high of a gear. Hers doesnt have a tach so we are guessing on the revs. Maybe this will help a little. Let me know if I can help.

Hey guys, I've just posted a question about the vac modulator then went on to read this posting about the lockup solenoid. What's it look like, location & what happens if you disconnect it all together

  • 2 weeks later...

Hey all....Well worked on Lumnia APV this weekend. Changed out all 3 pressure switches on the valve body and the 1 TCC switch itself. And this job is a bear. Have to drop the cradle almost to the ground to get enough clearance between inner fenderwell and side pan on trans. One word of warning! Do not forget about steering column connection when dropping said cradle. Once we got cradle down changing out the switches took approx 15 minutes. So if you have anything specific I'll try to answer. It did repair said problem. So I guess that we were lucky. Thanks again for all the input
