Switching To Synthetic

I have Mobil 1 in my Regal right now. I'd perfer Amsoil, but I had a walmart gift card and walmart doesn't carry Amsoil.

Since I have switched to synthetic my DIC has registered a .7 mpg improvement. Though part of it would be from the warmer temps lately, but oh well, I don't care. lol

For what it is worth, I changed my 1988 Oldsmobile Calais Quad 4 from conventional oil to Mobil One at around 100K miles. The car ran great at 179K and only used 1/2 quart between changes when I sold it. The new owner has continued to run Mobil one and has over 230K on the car right now. I feel it is quality oil and use it in my Corvette.

I'm using Kendall GT synthetic blend in my '90 Cutlass, just to try something new. I'll let you know if I send a sample into Blackstone Lab for analysis.

The topend oils like AMSOil and Royal Purple may be more expensive, however you make up some of that with greatly increased oil change intervals.

Do the research, you really can go 10,000+ miles on a single oil change with a high quality filter change every 5k or so with the top oils.

That's cool, but how CLEAN does your engine have to be to be able to do this? I mean if you had say 150k, drained the dino oil, added the Amsoil, surely it would get real dirty after a while. When would it be safe to start running the extended intervals?

Its just royal purple is extremly exspensive is why i said not to waste money when the same things less exspensive. And your right, im using Senthetic Blend, next oil change im going full

Just like before you're issuing irrelevant statements. OMG THE VALENCE! Stick to what you know...whatever that may be

Anyway semi-synthetics are very different from full synthetics when it comes to service interval and care. I change my oil once a year, and the filter every 6 months.

I thought sythetics were only good for 6-8k miles?

First of all... it's SYNTHETICS! Sorry I can't take it anymore! God I've seen that too many times so far in this post. lol...sorry

Most semi-synthetic oils like what is OEM for my g/f's Mazda6 have a service interval similar to that. Most full synthetics are over 3x that. However, the mileage interval is manufacturer specific, so investigate the particular application.

I use mobil 7500 and an AC delco filter on my 3.4x, change it about every 5k miles. The engine is much more quiet than when I broke it in with Murray's cheapo Kendall $3 a gallon stuff.

In the 3.1's, unless there's cooling leaks, most synths are good for at least 25k miles, if not more.

Been running Esso XD-3 0W-30 synth here for the past 25k, and you can still see the cross-hatch on the dipstick through the translucent oil.

Some people have been running the stuff in 3.1's and 3.4's for over 40k miles without draining and without filter changes.

Look at the mileage on my car. Oil changes are pretty much a thing of the past for me.

Of course you want to have a clean engine, AMSOil actually gaurentees thier oil for 25k under certain circumstances. One thing they require is to run a bottle of engine cleaner through the engine before switching to thier oil. I do thier cleaner every 25k or so and I do a full GM Top Engine Clean every 50k or so.

I have never heard of an explicit requirement for any engine flush before installation of synth including Amsoil. However, if you have any sludging, its an extremely good idea. The first oil change on synth will likely darken fairly quickly as most synths tend to contain significantly upgraded additives compared to run-of-the-mill cheap dino oils.

Haven't seen any evidence to suggest that Amsoil is any better than Mobil-1 in terms of longevity. Short of not having enough oil in the engine (check the dipstick periodically -- chances are, you might have to add a quart or more during a 25k mile interval), I haven't heard of any 3.1 being damaged or prematurely worn out due to oil breakdown.

I used to run Mobil-1 in my DOHC. Recently switched over to Amsoil. I usually run 4ish qts of 5w-30 and the remaining +/- 2 qts of 10w-30 (mixing blends is a-ok according to both Amsoil and Mobil 1) as I have a slight oil leak - to thicken the oil up some. This is my winter blend though (for ease of starting). Summer usually I'll run full 10w-30 Amsoil since it is warmer out. We run Amsoil in our built 77 Trans Am, my monte, and soon to run it in every vehicle we own.
