Intlcutlass
How hard are they to do? Any pointers or special tools? 89 Cutlass
GnatGoSplat
Pretty easy. Hardest part is popping the halfshafts out of the transmission. For the boots, you'll need snap ring pliers, something to cut the clamps (I used a rotary tool), and boot clamp pliers.
Intlcutlass
Do the axles pop out of the trans, or is there a ring I have to depress someplace... exactly what do I do?
GnatGoSplat
They just pop out. I think on the driver side, you have to pry it out using those indentions on the big part of the inner shaft. On the passenger side, I think you need to use a slide puller and a C-shaped attachment. That puller side is easier, it's a pain having to pry the driver side one out. GutlessSupreme
I got my driver's side out much easier than the passenger's. It's closer to the outside of the car/shorter/easier to reach the tranny end. give them a good pull and whack the casing on the tranny end a few times with a hammer. it'll help persuade them. 5speedz34
Are you rebuilding them? Your best bet is just to get new ones, and use your old ones as a core.
Bossman429
Just make sure you are pulling them out by the inner CV section. I stick a pry bar between the trans, and the back of the inner CV. Pry, and mangle it til it pops out. Just don't start yanking on the axle or outer CV section. The only thing that holds the two ends together laterally is the rubber CV boots. If you start pulling on the axle shaft, you can pull the boot apart, and then the innards fall out.
