GP1138
Since we just replaced the cluster in the new Prix, we expected the oil pressure to read correctly, but it doesn't, and when we turn the car off, there's a squeak from the engine. Could the oil pump be weak, or if the car is low on oil, could it cause this? We've been fighting with the charging system for a couple of days, so we've not been very quick to notice the oil. Robby1870
Whats it reading?
GP1138
Well, the new cluster we have has no numbers. Once idle settles down to normal, it reads in the red or lower. :?
Pontiac6KSTEAWD
try buying an external Oil pressure guage and plug it into the port where the Oil pressure sending unit is. This will verify if you have oil pressure or not. It could be something as simple as a bad oil sending unit, or a clogged pick up screen. But worst case scenario is that the OIL pump is getting old. Dont know how many miles you car has on it. But the oil pan probly has a leak in it anyways, so its kinda like taking 2 birds with 1 stone.. 5speedz34
You sure you hooked up the cluster right? I mean that's where I would start. IMO- oil pumps aren't problems on our engines.

I plugged it in, there's not much else. The engine is 180k, so it might be plugged or something.
White93z34
change the sending unit? at 180k i'd be sprised if a factory oil pressure sending unit worked at all.

dbtk2
change the sending unit? at 180k i'd be sprised if a factory oil pressure sending unit worked at all. Ditto. They don't typically last much over 100-120k. Shawn
5speedz34
Wait did you old cluster have a oil pressure gauge? If not then it would only have the swtich right? If so, then you have to replace that with a sender. But if that's not the case, what are the chances of the sender going at the same time? rudefyet
He didn't upgrade the cluster...he swapped in another one of the same type The old cluster was acting up (speedo, tach were way off) so he/we also figured the oil pressure gauge was off too, but apparently not
digitaloutsider
First off, the gauges on the cluster are far from acurate. Second, at 180k miles, I really doubt the factory oil pressure sensor is going to work right anyway.
Dark Ride
You Mentioned that you were fighting wih the charging system, is your battery good? I know from personal experience that a bad battery will mess with your gauges. I Had an unstable battery in my TGP for a bit and It would read negative RPMs. I got a new battery and it read fine. Otherwise, its probably the sensor or wiring. Just my opinion Mitch
