94 supreme Posted March 13, 2006 Report Posted March 13, 2006 I putting a tranny in the cutlass and i was wondering which was the easiest way of doing it. Would it be easier to drop the sub frame, pull out the bad one, then replace and bolt in the new tranny and then put the frame up after the tranny was bolted in or pull the sub frame, pull the bad one out, and bolt the tranny on to the subframe mount and line up the tranny and subframe and raise at the same time. and whoever has done this explain briefly how u did it. Please and the reson i'm thinking the second way is easier because something will hold the tranny up while u bolt it in or will the jack work jus as easy? I have taken the motor and tranny out the top a couple of times but never the out the bottam I have an engine hoist but i was considering makin a brace from one strut tower to the other to hold up the engine. Anyone else try that? Jus need to get it running for one year so i can build a motor for it Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 using a brace to hold the engine, and dropping the subframe is the way most shops will do it, when doin' a trans swap - but they use 4-point braces, just to help stablize the engine better. --Dave. Quote
1990lumina Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 You can buy a cheap engine brace that goes from strut tower to strut tower...you could probbaly make one that would work as well Quote

Regal_GS_1989 Posted March 14, 2006 Report Posted March 14, 2006 I worked at a transmission shop over the summer, and the way that we did this was we had a 2 long steel bars, with a big nut welded on the end of each one. We would put them in X across the top of the engine, with the nut going over one of the nuts on the strut tower so it doesnt slide. Than we would put a chain through the engine lifting hole, and wrap it around the 2 bars. Than just bolt the chain together. Never failed. However, the car was on a hoist so that made working underneith much easier. If you are doing this at home, and dont have access to a hoist, i would just pull the engine and trans out from the top. You said that you have already done this, and this would probably be the simplest way. Quote
5speedz34 Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 You can get the engine suppport bars on ebay. Quote
