Intimidatorz34
Well I had been noticing a faint puff of smoke coming from the steering column the last 2 times I had driven the z (2 times in the past 6 months). Well finally this weekend I decided to take it out for a drive again. The battery is charged, tried to turn it over, click, nothing. I initially had power to turn on the accessories, was resetting the computer and noticed some smoke again from the ignition. Now I can not get anything. Is there a resistor in the column that powers the entire car like the 97+ GPs that could have burnt up? I had the column apart at one point and know the wires themselves that power all the signals, wipers, etc are not fried. So it is definately something in the ignition itself. Thanks Jason
White93z34
that puff of smoke if fromthe turnsignal switch, just pull it apart and clean the contacts good with something like paint thinner and regrease with dielectric grease and that problem will be gone. Robby1870
that puff of smoke if fromthe turnsignal switch, just pull it apart and clean the contacts good with something like paint thinner and regrease with dielectric grease and that problem will be gone. But the turn signal switch being broken will not cause a no start condition. Could be a combination of problems causing the no start. Where does the smoke exactly come from? Around the turn signal stalk or the ignition lock cylinder?
Intimidatorz34
I know its not the turn signal switch, the smoke comes from the center of the column in between one of the cracks. The reason I say its not signal because I had the smoke, figured it was the TS switch, and replaced it. (The TS was also sticking. ) Well with a different switch it is still doing it. Stupid thing, I went out and tried it again, it fired up. But its got to be fixed, or else I will end up with another one of those stranded w-body stories. Intimidatorz34
Any ideas on what could be fried in the ignition. I put a fresh battery in it last nite, go out this morning and its dead. Something I believe got fried and is draining the battery. Im thinking its time to retire this beast to garage queen status, if only I had a garage bay for it.
