91GPSTE
So the past week the GP been acting up. When I go to start it up in the mornings, it runs horribly. Uneven like hell. So, I pulled the spark plugs yesterday and one of them had white ash deposits on it. I also noticed that I've been losing small amounts of coolant. I think my head gasket may be blown and is leaking coolant into that one cylinder. Also, I noticed that exhaust smells weird. Any thoughts? If this is indeed the case, I will be junking it or parting it out, unless someone is willing to pay me enough for it.

1990lumina
Does the exhaust smell "sweet".....if it does then it's coolant being burned
94CutlassSLCoupe
hmm the car doesn't look to be in bad shape. Why not just put some head gaskets in it...it wouldn't cost that much or take too horribly long to do.

birdman
ash deposits dont mean BHG, you plugs would be a very light tint of green and clean if it was leaking coolant. i belive ash deposits means running lean or too hot. my car starts rough when its cold too but after a minute its fine. another check you could do it take the rad. cap off and start the car and watch for bubbles, if you see them start to appear, thats bad. DaveFromColorado
ash can also be a sign of the plugs being one heat range too high, or excessive oil in the cylinder, or both. This could also cause a "strange smell" through the exhaust. I'd be willing to guess you've probably got some valve guide seals that just took a complete dump on ya. Those are easy to fix too! if ya want step-by-step help, I'm sure I can write somethin' up for ya. --Dave.
19Cutlass94
Ive got ash deposits on all of my plugs, but Im not loosing any coolant at all. Im not smoking out the tail pipe and theres no smell ( other than exhaust smell ) But I know its gotta be the valve seals. If it was the rings, youd be smoking some blue smoke pretty bad. Im willing to bet the ash deposits on your plugs are the same thing thats happening to me. valve seals. But I know what you mean, start it up and sometimes it just misfires and runs like shit.
