NeonKnight Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 So i have had this ticking noise for a while, i had said it in one of my previous threads a while back. i pulled the front valve cover looked and saw nothing, no broken lifters, they were all really tight. the sound comes from the front, or at least thats where i hear it. i have the felpro gasket set for the intake plenum which includes a TB gasket.. so when im looking into fixing the lifter i am going to port and polish my TB and do a coolant bypass on it so i can make sure my car sucks cold air. So how do i determine if a lifter is bad by looking at it? and the lifter is the part that sits on top of the rocker arms and spring correct? so as far as it goes to replace a lifter what all needs to be done? since i dont have money to take it to the shop, and my mom wont help me out, dad wont, bro is a lazy ass mechanic who dont care, and im kinda screwed lol.. i am mechanically enclined just tell me what i should do and i can do it. thanks in advanced Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted March 9, 2006 Report Posted March 9, 2006 Could be the tranny... http://60degreev6.com/Articles/Transmissions/4T60E/TSB05-4T60E.html Quote

NeonKnight Posted March 9, 2006 Author Report Posted March 9, 2006 sorry jeremy... <3 ? hmm i doubt it is the tranny, mainly because i dont have a 4T60, i have TH125 POS, and the faster the engine rpms are the faster the sound is. until the exhaust drowns it out, and the mechanic at a shop says it sounds like a lifter also. LOL he also asked if it was a 3.4 i told him no. haha, i bet he didnt wanna get anywhere near that thing hehe. hmm. ?? and once again jeremy <3 Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 9, 2006 Author Report Posted March 9, 2006 *cough* edit... *cough* <3 ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 11, 2006 Author Report Posted March 11, 2006 so when i tear it apart what should i look for? Quote
Supreme Cutlass Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 you sure its not the injectors? could be worth looking into My cheap-o way of narrowing down noises is to use a long screwdriver, hold it against valve covers, fuel rails, etc. and put your ear against it to find out where the noise is coming from. NeonKnight Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 Doesn't even matter anymore. the car is fucked to all hell... im so pissed right now. All of my racing, if you can call it that, flooring the thing constantly like it was a corvette... i fucking wish. well that car is fucked, engine has a rod knocking. has not seized and i refuse to drive it hoping in the chance that it is possible to salvage this pos... the only thing in this world that makes me sad, angry, depressed is my car. if she aint happy i aint happy. well she's crying and i am feeling for her, my dumb mistakes... only 149.5k so either i am going to get this engine rebuilt.. with the no money i have. and no job... or i am going to the junkyard to find one.. once again the same problem. i am not gonna do any swaps or anything, just going to put in another 91 3.1 MPFI *sigh* poor car Quote
joey b Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 how did you determine it to be rod knock? I would wonder about a crank sensor or a knock sensor. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 if the knock sensor were bad, it would have thrown a code for the check engine light to come on. that's what mine did before. Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 oh just because its a rod, no power, loud metallic knocking noise above 2k rpms and anything higher it just gets louder and louder. plus i had a bad lifter before. and never fixed it.... for 2 or 3 weeks. and i continued to drive it around, do stupid things in it. Quote
joey b Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 mine did that when the crank sensor was shot, then I beat on it and cracked a piston in half due to spark knock. Quote
Brian P Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 Does the sound get worse as it warms up ? Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 15, 2006 Author Report Posted March 15, 2006 im located in california. bay area, east bay area. well my grandfather came over, he has been a GM tech for about 25+ years, he is a jack of all trades. he listend to it and noticed that is sounded like oil starvation... so i added a quart, it made it sound slightly better but oil was now in operating range. He said it is deffinetly metallic, and low end. A Rod, or maybe a Main bearing... but he said the oil pressure is too good for it to be a main bearing. Also the noise only makes any sound when @ about 2k rpms, thats why he thinks it is odd since the sound is not consistant. i wish i had a way for you guys to hear the sound... but i don't I also have no money to even get a engine for this car... let alone get me another one. I need an entire new short block i bet, he also smelled my trans fluid since i said it was acting funny, he said that it had a little bit of a smell to it which indicates it is going to start being a bastard. Now since i live in the great state of California!!! i can not just switch over to a 3.4, or a 3.8 which might be easier to find.. well not the 3.4 everytime i have gone to a junkyard i have never seen a lumina. wqhat should i do? i have replaced too many things in this car to jsut fubar it. joey b Posted March 15, 2006 Report Posted March 15, 2006 don't pass up a 20 dollar crank sensor for a rod. Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 you really think it could be a CPS? if so this could be interesting... i will have to tear into it this weekend or friday and try... hell if it dont work i will just take it back and say i never used it! Quote
joey b Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 just place an ohmeter at the wire that runs from the CPS to the ICM. It has twisted yellow and purple wires. Ohm readings should read like as high as 1100 ohms. Quote
White93z34 Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 don't pass up a 20 dollar crank sensor for a rod. you have to be nuts if you mistake rod knock for a sensor. don't the junkyards near you keep anything old? you could put a 3100 in place of your 3.1 and not have to do any real additional work to make everything bolt up. you can use the computer and wiring that you already have. just swap all the accessories and brackets over. Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 16, 2006 Author Report Posted March 16, 2006 not in california i can not, smog laws suck. my bro said something about it being possible to swap a newer engine in.. but you have to get it inspected or something? i dont know. for now i am driving his probe, lil 5 speed 4 banger... it's sad cuz it is faster than my lumina lol. Quote
joey b Posted March 16, 2006 Report Posted March 16, 2006 if you get pinging bad enough it can sound very much like a bad rod. My engine sounded like it was being beaten on with a frying pan- no joke. Just a broken crank sensor. Quote
NeonKnight Posted March 17, 2006 Author Report Posted March 17, 2006 i ran this buy my grandfather.. he said a a CPS would not make this noise, he said indeffinetly this is a Bearing sound, or bearing knock or something like that lol. yea so i dont know, im starting to enjoy this 5 speed probe Ford/Mazda combo thingie... im getting used to the stick and bad clutch, but it is a nice car, accelerates better than my lumina i wouldn't be suprised if i could beat one.. well not my granny shifting big butt! it is sad... im a chevy man starting to like the ford... but i can also say that its a mazda!
