TheEddie
Alright guys, so heres my dilemma. After a day of putting on new pads and rotors and installing a new rear wheel bearing housing on my 99 Monte Carlo I find that the wiggle in the left rear wheel wasnt because of the wheel bearing(replacing this did get rid of the humming and vibrating), and now the left rear strut makes a horrible noise when the body of the car comes down immediately after braking. New strut is in order. Also, the top of the strut sits wierd in the housing. Can I replace just the worn out left rear strut mount and not replace the strut itself? Thanks guys, ahead of time. 92LuminaRS
Did you check local autoparts stores? I would replace them in a set, but I'm sure you can pick up a single one.
TheEddie
I've been looking around and have found decent deals but im looking for the cheapest way out, can i replace the mount without replacing the srut? The mount is the part that is giving me problems. *rattling over bumps and griding when suspension is pressurized after braking.
herb427sc
The strut and mount are sold seperately. You can replace just the mount..
DiscoStudd
Yes, X2. It shouldn't be a problem unless the nut is rusted on to the end of the strut piston, like this:
92LuminaRS
That strut definately has some issues :?
DiscoStudd
Well, yeah it sure did, but the mount was torched beyond belief. The strut had no charge left in it and when the mount let loose, the piston dropped back into the body, allowing the wheel to swing out whilst taking a sharp corner. Good times, indeed! GP1138
Somehow I knew I'd be seeing that picture when I saw Kevin posting about struts.
92LuminaRS
good god that must have been an interesting ride! did it damage anything else when that happened?
DiscoStudd
It happened close to home, so I only felt the "swing" around one corner. It actually put a small crease in the lip of the fenderwell. Nothing a hammer and dolly can't straighten out. I was able to limp the car by shoving the piston back up into the mount and clamping the end of it with a vice-grip...
