IBuiltMine-o1oo
can you use a front mount intercooler on a 3800 sc? Im just wondering about the blower to intake manifold connection, if you can get piping there to run to the intercooler, and back again? Maybe it has to be a water to air intercooler? DaveFromColorado
You're thinkin' like the Ford Supercoupe's the way they have the supercharger mounted on top for looks only, but run the intake piping all the way 'round the engine bay... Unfortunately can't be done on the 3800SC's very easily, I'm sure with lots of time, you could make something work, but to get it to fit properly would be a whole bigger chore. You'd be better off trying to work a water to air intercooler in there, directly under the supercharger, much the way ford does with the Cobra's and the Lightning engines. --Dave. IBuiltMine-o1oo
cool thanks, i see how thats done now! Are the water/air more eficiant then air/air? They probably are in slow moving aplications.....
92LuminaRS
IIRC water/air is superior in any application. Especially if there is a fan installed for lower speed operation. I remember somewhere that used superchilled water. Not too sure of the specifics though.

And even the best-engine-ever, the L67. Here's ZZP's short-stack intercooler that allows you to run an IC, but still keep your factory hood. http://www.zzperformance.com/grand_prix/products1.php?id=

Imagine if you could double up the cores. Oh, and BTW... water-to-air intercoolers are always more efficent then air-to-air. --Dave.
Miko K
And then, imagine what it does when you cool down the water using your car's AC system...Inside the diamond plated tank is the AC evaporator, behind it is the pump and the accumulator is next to the belt. sl3196
Wouldn't the drag from the a/c do more harm then good?
DaveFromColorado
I've seen setups like that before, where the A/C is only used to cool the intercooler cooling system between races, and then shut off while actually racing. --Dave. Miko K
Even on stock vehicles the AC clutch disengages at WOT, and then I have reprogrammed mine like this: In my case(with my capacity of coolant) the cold coolant is enough for ~15 seconds of WOT, before it warms up enough to create any KR. So that's enough to allow me to run extra 8PSI boost, which is an extra 100HP(with the additional mods). So even if my AC was running all the time, 10HP drag from the compressor is far less than the 100HP gain :wink

The only thing it does is allow you to use your stock engine cover, and obviously its a lot cheaper than the other intercoolers as well. The only time you have clearance problems is with the ram air hoods because underneath they are obviously lower. Then you just get a shorter engine mount and your problems are solved. Shawn I was under the impression that the normal SS's didn't allow you to use your factory hood. Sorry for the misunderstanding.
