Nick1234 Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 When going 42+ mph, lets just say 60, i give it gas and the motor revs up about 300 rpm without the car accelerating. it does it for about 1-2 seconds and then drops back down. Nick Quote
88Regal Limited Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 You know hot th converters unlock and lock, right? I believe that is the torque converter unlocking for more useable RPM for power. I may be wrong though Quote

Nick How much gas are you giving it? If you are just talking about a little throttle, then that is completely normal because its the torque convertor unlocking (so its not bogging the engine). Then once it gets up to a speed that it thinks it doesn't need the convertor unlocked, it locks it. Quote
chadz34 Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 That's what happens to mine, I thought it was a problem too. Quote
92LuminaRS Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 I've never noticed nick around here... That's a nice Lumina! Quote
Nick1234 Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 The torque converter is not unlocking though. The way my car runs now is i can go 1/2 throttle without the torque converter unlocking. After 1/2 way it goes straight into third gear. . Now it i take my foot off the gas, the converter unlocks and stays in 4th. So when the 300 rpm increase happens say at about 1/3 throttle, the torque converter is remaining locked. So im assuming something is slipping. Granter that is a lot of pressure to be able to go down 1/2 way throttle with the converter being locked so im being careful. And thanks LuminaRS Nick Quote
92LuminaRS Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Do you have the 4 speed or the 3? You might have a bad TCC silenoid (sp?) mabye? And your welcome. Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 I'd guess that it's unlocking because it's got the overdrive program once you're in overdrive. because overdrive is actually turning the diff faster then the input (of the driven half of the chain) it will unlock the TC to allow more more torque multiplication ... remember, a Torque converter will not only allow more usable RPM's, it will also multiply the torque VIA the stator. The converter will unlock durring all gear changes (with the stock program) --Dave. Quote
92LuminaRS Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 See if it does it in drive also, if it's only doing it in OD it might be normal operation. I haven't driven my car around in a while so I don't remember if that's normal or not Quote
digitaloutsider Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Every automatic GM FWD transmission I've ever had does that. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Whenever you fully let off the throttle OR touch the brake while driving, the torque convertor will unlock, then lock up again a second or two later as long as you're not on the throttle too hard. Quote

Yeah, I actually thought that was a problem. But, I guess it's normal. With mine, when you get to the desired speed the prm drops like it's in a nother gear, then you can't bring the rpm's up UNLESS you let off the gas, or you give it more. Quote
