chadz34
Just wondering what you guys think the BEST mod for 100 bucks is. 1996 Lumina LS DOHC.
fastbird232
A full engine tune-up, especially on a ten-year-old car.
chadz34
Well it has new plugs, wires, oil, oil filter and fuel filter. I don't know what else a tune-up consists of?
slick
Well it has new plugs, wires, oil, oil filter and fuel filter. I don't know what else a tune-up consists of? Air filter, PCV valve, tranny fluid and filter(possibly even a flush). A fluid flush will be a good $100 alone.

Um, I was thinking of getting two cherry bomb mufflers, just to make my car louder, since it'a quiet as hell. Do you guys think it would sound really that bad? slick
Not a good idea on the 3.4. At all.
chadz34
Not a good idea on the 3.4. At all. Ok, from a fellow 3.4 owner I will believe you, why do you say that though, way too raspy or what?
THe_DeTAiL3R
That would sound like ASS. For $100 get a K&N (drop in or otherwise) Not really much you can do "mod wise" for $100....
slick
The 3.4 is a very very raspy engine.
chadz34
The 3.4 is a very very raspy engine. I know that, I want my 96' to sound like my 92' which is a stock DOHC, maybe a little more loud, with a bit more rasp. The 96' just isn't loud at all, the engine is, but the exhuast is barely even noticeable.
slick
Pick up a set of magnaflow mufflers. Probably set you back a good $150 though, but will have a great sound. Ask anyone thats heard my car.

Justin
I like the sound of my '92 Z with 8" glasspacks, it sounds like the world is coming to an end every time I get on it. Car alarms beware though, it's very loud.
92LuminaRS
Glasspacks sound good when their installed backwards
fastbird232
Anyone else find it depressing that the best mod you can do for $100 is a tune up to get your old engine back to stock power? Bleh... But anyway, like I've said before, an $89 tune up on my dilapidated '89 SE's 2.8 did wonders (plugs, wires, Seafoam, oxygen sensor, trans flush and filter, oil and filter, air filter). I still haven't done the same to my 3.4, but I'll bet it's the only $100 mod you can do where you'll actually feel an immediate increase in power and response. slick
A stock, good running engine is better than a modded, poorly running engine. Believe me, i've been fighting my modded one since I've owned it.

92LuminaRS
Good luck finding an overdrive pully for your alternator
manitcor
Good luck finding an overdrive pully for your alternator Pulley for the 3800 is a direct swap and is approx 10-15% larger
92LuminaRS
WTF why didn't anyone tell me this when I was looking... What is the actual size of the 3800 pulley?
manitcor
this is the only pic I have when did it. IIRC the DOHC pulley is the same size as the 3100 pulley Its not much of a gain from it, maybe a itty bitty bit of topend. When I replaced my alternator last year it wasnt even worth the trouble to swap the pulley over.
92LuminaRS
Hmmm... The one that came with my hi-amp alternator was 2 1/8", I ended u getting one from a repair shop from a ford that was 1 3/4", yet it is still not enough. I've been looking for 1 1/2" forever becuase like you said, it's such a small gain that it's barely even noticable.
