Calvin Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 I have access to some J/L HM282 transmissions. Has anyone ever swapped the J/L trans into a W? I assume it will be a plug n play with no speedo error since the speed sensor is driven off the diff....? I would also be swapping the extension tube off of my old 282. The reason I want to do this is to gain the higher ratios in first and fifth so I can go more than like 17MPH in first and turn less than 3000 at 80. Has anyone done this? Is the fifth gear ratio too tall to pull the car along with a regular old 2.8 or 3.1? Quote
brianteel Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 what engine does the car have in it now.....i am going to same no for this swap it does not have the torque shaft Quote
Calvin Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 You are going to do the same swap? I assume you also find first gear really useful I know I have to swap the intermediate shaft out. It is currently a 2.8, but that is just till I find a good deal on a 3400 or MY2000+ large runner 3100. Kurt Quote
brianteel Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 what i am asking is what car and engine is the trans in now...you really need to use a w-body one. there really is no way to swap it. i have looked the shaft is bolted on i swapped a 5psd in to my 96 and did alot of searching into parts Quote
Calvin Posted March 2, 2006 Author Report Posted March 2, 2006 The trans is in a 89 Beretta GT with a 2.8 also. I know the intermediate shaft bolts on to the case, but if you look at the Beretta or the Cavalier or even the Fiero 282 case, you will see that they are all tapped for the extension shaft. The extension shaft is SUPPOSED to (from what I hear)op right out of the old trans and slide into the new one What I am worried about is something more perplexing. During Newyears 06 I had a Fiero GT 2.8 with a 282 trans taken apart in the garage and everything was pretty much the same except the bellhousing casting took a different kind of slave cylinder. What was bothersome was that the axleshaft splines were DIFFERENT on the Fiero transmissions versus the spare 282 I have for a W body. The Fiero axles had I think one less spline on each side or something, and W axles wouldn't go in!!! I know a lot of people are going to read that and think i just didn't push hard enough to get over the snap ring, but it really is true. I took the inner pot straight out of the W trans and couldn't put it in the Fiero trans! I had this problem one time before, but it was with a TH125 in an A body; there were two types a heavy duty 35 spline and a standard duty 34 spline, and the wagons I think it was got a different inner axle spline than coupes/sedans. The only things I am really worried about are 1 being able to put the extension shaft itself onto the diff splines 2 whether or not the speedo will still read accurately 3 whether or not my little 2.8 will be able to move the car along at freeway speeds with the .72 OD ratio vs the current .81 or whatever it is. 4 finding someone that can change the NV ratios on my PROM so my UPSHIFT light still works properly now that Mick and GMPCM are out of the picture. Perhaps the Beretta PROM would work...? Quote
jeremy Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 even if it can be done, I wouldn't want a taller 5th gear on a 2.8....... Quote
Calvin Posted March 3, 2006 Author Report Posted March 3, 2006 I bet you would if you had only owned a W body for 7 months and it had already been through Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Massachussetts, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Louisianna, Tennesee, and Kentucky. Fuck, I know there were some other trips in there, but anyways you get the idea. I am also sick of getting rocked at stoplights when I have to shift before 20 MPH, makes it hard to shoot out in front when you are at an intersection and you are trying to get over to hop into the right lane to make a right turn at the next block up. This happens in my commute every day. at a Y intersection followed by a regular X intersection. Hell, its hard just to keep up with the flow of traffic at a green light, having to rip off a shift before even getting really going. Not to mention, the 2.8 is coming out for something with 50%(!) more power (just a 3400, but still sounds impressive) Then I will REALLY be pissed with how fast I run out of first gear! Quote
