THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 So I'm thinking ahead for future engine swap... I hate wiring, and anything custom I don't really want to get into since I've never swapped an engine before (my experience is limited down to doing LIM gaskets on my 3100.) So anyways I'm wondering what my choices would be for an easy "drop in". I know that I could easily put a 3400 in it without much work. Although, I think I would probably get bored of that engine (not a hell of alot more power than 3100). I'm also thinking about finding a 3.4DOHC, would be a fun engine to have. Since there were GTPs in 1995, I'm assuming it's just a matter of finding a 3.4... and a new ECM? Also, what about the 1995 Regal GS engine.. 3800. Are they a drop in (OBD 1.5) or would it require stupid wiring? I would also either get a matching tranny, or a full rebuild on my current 4T60e (NEEDS it anyways). Quote
fastbird232 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 You know, my brother keeps telling me if he found an LQ1 in a yard, he'd drop it in his '00 SE. Thing is, if you're gonna go through all the work of an engine swap, why not drop in a 3800? You're still getting just over 200 horses, but the 3800 actually has an aftermarket, whereas your options are limited with the 3.4L DOHC. Yeah, the LQ1 is fun to have with it's 7000 rpm redline, but you've got more potential with the 3.8L. Or you could just sell your car and snag a '95 GTP. They're pretty decent cars... Quote
jeremy Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 a turbo 3800 would be tits....if/when I put something else in the STE it will be a 3800 at minimum...they are cheap, plentiful and have an aftermarket... Quote
manitcor Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 without changing the harness and having to play with wiring you are stuck with the 3100, 3400 or prob the DOHC if you change the PCM. You wont get the full power of the 3400 unless you upgrade the harness and get an updated PCM. No Pain, No Gain. Suck it up and learn some wiring basics. Quote
brianteel Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I make plug and play 3800 harness for the L67 and L36 motors and they are OBD 2 ready/ you would have to be willing to pay though. here is a list of motors that bolt in 3.4 DOHC 3800 NA 3800 supercharged 3.1 3100 3400 some are easier then others. i have found from pulling a 3.4 DOHC there are alot of other parts that are needed to get it in. the L36 you can get with trans for $500 if you look hard and the L67 you could get for around $1200 complete. for both the 3800 motors you would want to use the 98-99 monte carlo or lumina 3800 harness slightly modded to work in your car. THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 28, 2006 Author Report Posted February 28, 2006 No Pain, No Gain. Suck it up and learn some wiring basics. I know how to solder quite well, everyone just says how much of a PITA the 3800 is but I really don't know unless I were to see for myself I guess... Quote
gp90se Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 Get a brianteel adapter, use an LQ1 96+ motor, 91-93 wiring harness and pop the SOB in, the LQ1 is a whole lotta fun 8) Quote
DiscoStudd Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 You could drop in an L36, attach it to your 4T60-E, and run it off 94-95 Regal L27 wiring and PCM. IIRC, the harness should be plug-n-play (as long as you stick with a 95 harness.) I would consult an FSM to be sure (or L67swap.com) but I remember the harness pinouts being the same across the W-Body board in 95. Worst case scenario, you'd need to move a few pins around on the engine side of the bulkhead... Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 does the 90 degree motor bolt to the same trani's that the 660's had, or was there a different bellhousing? --Dave. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted March 2, 2006 Report Posted March 2, 2006 I duno I was looking at this thread: http://60degreev6.com/discussion/viewtopic.php?t=4555 But thats if you werent gonna mod your 3800, but it seems like you are so thats out, but thats why Im getting a 3400 when I need a swap instead of a 3800 Quote
brianteel Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 I do not know why everyone thinks a L36 or L67 swap is so hard. it bolts right in and using the right monte harness it can be made to plug in and look stock. i am not pushing for anything. both 3800 motor and trans bolt right in with no mod. you can use ALL stock parts to get the motor to work. the hard part is the wiring and even that is not bad. i have diagrams for everything. here is a picture of a 97 cutlass with a L67 and a monte harness here is a 96 GP with my old motor Quote
gp90se Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 brian, off topic but any idea the weight difference between the LQ1 and the L67? Quote
mfewtrail Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 brian, off topic but any idea the weight difference between the LQ1 and the L67? I'm not Brian  ...but I'm sure Vegeta probably has a good idea of what an LQ1 weighs(at least the heads and cam carriers I would assume since he works on them and has likely shipped some of them to people before). If I had a large scale here, I could get a weight on my LQ1 crate engine... Quote
JMo60 Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 i swapped a 3400 with a cammotion cam, and i used a nitrous kit... solid and fun car... Quote
brianteel Posted March 3, 2006 Report Posted March 3, 2006 i do not think the difference is much between them. Quote
