Jackhammer under cyl. 2

Hey all, After having my car running for just over a month, more problems.

The car idles ok but it sounds like theres a jackhammer coming from the passenger side of the engine. it started out quietly ticking but turned into a clatter you can't talk over. The actuator for the timing belt came undone but fixing it had no effect of the noise. It first started ticking after driving REALLY hard for a little while. oil level is good, it starts a little hard but idles ok. other than that, I can't think of any other symptoms.

any number of things, but i'm willing to bet hes got a spun bearing. intrestingly enough if its just that and caught very early he could get off with no crank damage. and have it be fixable

I was gonna say, if he doesn't get it checked out, having a broken rod in your engine could damage more internal parts of the motor. If it happened to me I'd have it flatbedded over to a shop. What about you guys?

A broken pushrod on an engine without pushrods? Unlss engines have some other kind of rod that i don't know of....I don't know WTF is going on :bawl:

wtf...connecting rod perhaps...piston rod? lmao...id be scared about his crank cause he drove it with it like that...but then again i dont know how strong our cranks are...

edit: also make sure you look at the top end of the motor...if theres little sparkly shit(metal pieces) up there then just go buy yourself a new motor...

A rod knocking on the LQ1 is very common, especially with the o ring oil leak and people not keeping the proper amounts of oil in it. I had to do an engine swap thanks to the jackass who I bought my GTP from.

I hear about rod knocks in 3.1's way more often then in the 3.4DOHC's.

As far as I know, the DOHC's are more prone to timing deflection form a weak or worn belt.

as for oil, I was about 1 QT low.

what is this timing deflection?

Also, what actually causes rod knock. I'd assume it's the rod knocking on something but what and why?

There's not a repair on this engine whose labor scares me. Money, however is an object.

The ROFL brothel is damn funny too.

:werd: I haven't ever heard a DOHC with any rod knock, so it can't be that common.

i don't get how anyone can say how one engine suffers from catastrophic(sp??) bottom end failure more then others (some exceptions... chrysler 2.7, etc) especially a 3.1 vs. a 3.4. old parts fail, one guy might get to 90,000 miles and have the engine go kaboom, another guy may go 200,000+ and never have any problems. so much of it depends on how the car was taken care of.

rod knock is one of many things, none of which are good. bearing spinning, end cap coming off, a wrist pin coming loose, it could be any numer of things really.

it dosen't seem like it'd be hard to pull the oil pan on one of these cars, so drain the oil, drop the pan and see what all is in the bottom of it.

draining the oil could be sufficient enough really..cause if you find metal in it...uh oh...and like i said before make sure you check the top end if you find metal in the oil...
