loominaz34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Hey all, After having my car running for just over a month, more problems. The car idles ok but it sounds like theres a jackhammer coming from the passenger side of the engine. it started out quietly ticking but turned into a clatter you can't talk over. The actuator for the timing belt came undone but fixing it had no effect of the noise. It first started ticking after driving REALLY hard for a little while. oil level is good, it starts a little hard but idles ok. other than that, I can't think of any other symptoms. Quote
Supreme Cutlass Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Improper valvetrain clearance maybe? Does the sound increase/decrease with engine speed? Quote
chadz34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 um rod knock That sucks! Check it out though for sure. Hope for the best. Quote
White93z34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 pull the oil pan and see what falls out. Quote

chadz34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 pull the oil pan and see what falls out. Oil? WOW. ROLFCOPTER. That is amazing. P.S would the rod actually fall out the bottom or could it not get stuck somewhere? Quote
White93z34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 any number of things, but i'm willing to bet hes got a spun bearing. intrestingly enough if its just that and caught very early he could get off with no crank damage. and have it be fixable Quote

If it happened to me I'd have it flatbedded over to a shop. What about you guys? Quote
Guest donkeykongrape Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 A broken pushrod on an engine without pushrods? Unlss engines have some other kind of rod that i don't know of....I don't know WTF is going on :bawl: Quote

19902drlumina Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 well i worded it wrong connecting rod was the word i was looking for Quote
JakeMetz63 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 A rod knocking on the LQ1 is very common, especially with the o ring oil leak and people not keeping the proper amounts of oil in it. I had to do an engine swap thanks to the jackass who I bought my GTP from. Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I hear about rod knocks in 3.1's way more often then in the 3.4DOHC's. As far as I know, the DOHC's are more prone to timing deflection form a weak or worn belt. --Dave. Quote

loominaz34 Posted February 28, 2006 Author Report Posted February 28, 2006 as for oil, I was about 1 QT low. what is this timing deflection? Also, what actually causes rod knock. I'd assume it's the rod knocking on something but what and why? There's not a repair on this engine whose labor scares me. Money, however is an object. The ROFL brothel is damn funny too. Quote

FastSE2DR Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 a rod knock is the rod knocking on the crank lol...BAD lol Quote

FastSE2DR Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 it sounds the same with any motor....it sounds like metal on metal...it happens when the rod bearing disappears some way or another.... Quote
White93z34 Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 i don't get how anyone can say how one engine suffers from catastrophic(sp??) bottom end failure more then others (some exceptions... chrysler 2.7, etc) especially a 3.1 vs. a 3.4. old parts fail, one guy might get to 90,000 miles and have the engine go kaboom, another guy may go 200,000+ and never have any problems. so much of it depends on how the car was taken care of. rod knock is one of many things, none of which are good. bearing spinning, end cap coming off, a wrist pin coming loose, it could be any numer of things really. it dosen't seem like it'd be hard to pull the oil pan on one of these cars, so drain the oil, drop the pan and see what all is in the bottom of it. Quote
FastSE2DR Posted March 1, 2006 Report Posted March 1, 2006 draining the oil could be sufficient enough really..cause if you find metal in it...uh oh...and like i said before make sure you check the top end if you find metal in the oil... Quote
