ExZion Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Ok I just replaced the plugs and wires in my cutlass about 2 weeks ago. with ac delco pregapped plugs and autolite wires. now my gas milage is down to like 15MPG.. WTF.. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 27, 2006 Report Posted February 27, 2006 Where are you driving? City, highway? I get like 15mpg driving to work, cause it's a short drive (not even 2miles), it's all stop and go and my car is barely warmed up by the time I'm there. I get at least 30mpg on the highway though, and about 22mpg city/highway if it's a good mix. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Well what engine do you have? That will make a little different but not very much. Right now I get about 23mpg around town Quote
92LuminaRS Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Something must be wrong with my car becuase I only get 21Mpg highway Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 Wow, I still get like 26mpg highway when I leave it in 3rd (non-overdrive).... but haven't really pushed it above 60mph. Quote
ExZion Posted February 28, 2006 Author Report Posted February 28, 2006 i am driving all around town and i do have a lead foot.... its a 3100.... Yeah i work less than a mile and a half away and it dosent warm up at all by the time i get there. So u guys think its normal? Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 i am driving all around town and i do have a lead foot.... its a 3100.... Yeah i work less than a mile and a half away and it dosent warm up at all by the time i get there. So u guys think its normal? yes. Take if for a longer drive, as long as you are getting like ~30mpg highway then you are okay. 3100 is a great highway engine... I could probably get like 400miles/tank but in the city I'm lucky to get 250miles Winter gas sucks too!!! Quote
ExZion Posted February 28, 2006 Author Report Posted February 28, 2006 ok Thats what i thought but i was just wondering. Btw On another Thread i posted that i was going to do the LIM. i took it to the dealer where my dad bought it new and they said it was just condesation from driving it a mile and putting it in a warm garage. THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 yeah that's what they told me too... Check around the engine where the lower intake meets the block, and see if it looks wet (indication of external leak). When the engine is completely cold check the coolant level and make sure it is exactly on the "cool" line. Then run it on the spot (probably 20min) until it gets hot and the fan kicks in, it should go up to the "hot" line on the reservoir. Check it for a couple days like that and you'll know if you are losing coolant.... Quote
ExZion Posted February 28, 2006 Author Report Posted February 28, 2006 i have done that and i have no external leaks and the coolent is not being lost nor is the oil level going up... Quote
94CutlassXtreme Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 If you drive to work and your car never fully warms up, it probably stays in open loop in which the O2 doesn't help with the air/fuel mixture and it just dumps gas in. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 i have done that and i have no external leaks and the coolent is not being lost nor is the oil level going up... Then you got nothing to worry about. But as always with the 3100, keep an eye on the coolant level! If its warm one day then cold the next I also sometimes get a little bit of foamy stuff on the oil cap/PVC... but I check my coolant level like every 2 days (I'm fucking paranoid.. lol) and I've change the oil like 3 times now so I'm pretty sure I got most of the old coolant cleaned out... CowboyBilly9Mile Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 One should never assume that a spark plug, new out of the box, is gapped correctly. Always personally gap them prior to installation. Quote
Psych0matt Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I've never gapped a spark plug and have never had any problems whatsoever Quote
chadz34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I've never gapped a spark plug and have never had any problems whatsoever You probably have the pre-gapped ones. Even if they aren't properly gapped, it will still run. It may even run right. Quote
Psych0matt Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 yeah, thats what i figured :? Quote
slick Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 I always gap my spark plugs, and when I check the condition, I always check the gaps as well. Oh, and I track my MPG on an excel spreadsheet. Try an average of 13 mpg mixed city and highway driving. Quote
chadz34 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 yeah, thats what i figured :? Some of the one's for our W's are pre-gapped, I'd just get a gapper coin dealy and make sure it is gapped to what your service manual says. Quote
f_399 Posted February 28, 2006 Report Posted February 28, 2006 highway i almost get 400 miles city about 250-260 Quote
