timdjohn
Ok I need to get a 1992 grand prix with the 4 speed automatic. the transmission is bad in the car and so the car will not move, it does slightly bump it a bit when you put the car in gear but that is it. I was thinking I have seen that these cars had that option of starting off in second gear for snow traction. Not sure if it is just first gear that is bad of just the whole trans but it would sure be nice if the car could move under it's own power if I could get it to engage in 2nd gear. So can you make these transmissions go into second gear from the start if you do not have this second gear start switch? Probably a false hope but I had to ask before I spend a bunch to tow it. jeremy
actually you can wire a 2nd Gear start switch into cars that don't have them....not sure if it will actually be much help though.... http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=36750&highlight=second+gear+start http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=22190&highlight=second+gear+start
GutlessSupreme
You can only make them work with an electronic transmission. Unfortunetly, your '92 doesn't have one.
Crazy K
same problem, same tranny...... On my vert, i have to raise a wheel, and run it momentarily in gear, then put the car down (wheel stopped, tranny in park is fine, but stop the wheel with the brake before putting it in park) then it runs... it seems to be a problem related to low fluid pressure... See if this trick works for you.

I am not positive if my 92 has the elec tranny but on the w-body padg it lists that mine does. the elec tranny for the 3.1 from 92-97. ToroToro
Well I am positive it's not electronic, unless you've got the 3.4...

GutlessSupreme
3.1's did not get the 4T60-E (at least in W-bodies) until '93, so the information you read was incorrect. 3.4 DOHC's, however, had this tranmission from their introduction in '91, IIRC. Trust me, your tranny is just a 4T60 like the one in my '92 Cutlass.
92LuminaRS
How can you tell the difference between the 4t60 and the 4t60-e? The transmission in my car looks exactly like the one in my stepdad's '94 cutty, and his is the 4t60-e, but my car is a '
Crazy K
well they are VERY similiar, the use the same filter and many gut parts... but the tranny pan is slightly different, there is an extra arm/protrusion on the E's pan. and the electroinc ones usually have a E on the pan. 92LuminaRS
I don't think mine even has any markings on the pan other than hydromatic if I remember correctly. When I'm not suick anymore I'll have to check it out... Pics of this arm/protrusion?
Turbo231
This tread is useless without pictures...this is from my transmisson filter writeup: For those of you who can't read backwards, there is an E on the end of the Electronic Transmissions....this is a 1993 LQ1 pan. Crazy K
the protrusion is the half circle shape on the left side of the phot above.
PCGUY112887
Could you just put the selector in 2 or 3 to see if it will move in those gears?
nebojsa_o
Hmm... My 4T60-E doesn't have those letters on the pan. :? I can't remember what it has, but I'm 100% sure it didn't say 4T60-E on it, when I dropped it...
PCGUY112887
My 4T60-E has no writing at all, dropped the pan for a fluid change just last week.
GutlessSupreme
Could you just put the selector in 2 or 3 to see if it will move in those gears? that only limits the top gear that it will drive in.
