5speedz34 Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 I know the ignition key will but what about the door key? The auction says it for a lumina. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6231325003&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1 Quote
19902drlumina Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 the door key will work 99 percent sure as longas groves are right u could always run down to lowes or home depot and check em out Quote
WhiteMonteZZZ Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 Yep. If it's the same physical keyway (B, D, H, K) as your door key, it'll work no problem. The head of the key (for doors anyways) makes no difference whatsoever. Quote
WhiteMonteZZZ Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 EDIT: That specific blank for the DOOR is an 'H' blank (and Ignition is an 'E' blank). IIRC, your 92 AND your 88 should both take 'C' and 'D' blanks for ign and door, respectively. Might want to double check... Quote
WhiteMonteZZZ Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 What blanks do you 92 guys have? Look on your keys for a single letter, will be combinations (ignition and door) of the following: A/B, C/D, E/H, J/K. If your keys are mismatched from those above combinations, your locks have been changed at one time or another in your vehicle. I'm curious what the 92s take, or even when the C/D vs. E/H switch was made on W-bodies. Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 A trunklid(I think the car was a 90) that I got from the junkyard the key says D, but the extra key I got cut at GM for the 92 says E. These are the door keys. Quote
ToroToro Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 My 94 uses an H for the door, FWIW... Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 24, 2006 Author Report Posted February 24, 2006 I bought some from that dude before worked in my CS Where they the same ones in the picture. The only reason I'm looking is because my dealer told me the ignition keys are discontinued. Quote
patgizz Posted February 24, 2006 Report Posted February 24, 2006 i got mine made at the home depot for around $3 each last year for the 94. they had plenty of them. Quote

These are the door keys. The key samped E MUST be an ignition key. If it's an oval key, it MUST be B, D, H, K. Strattec never released a secondary key w/a primary groove. Quote
1990lumina Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 My car has door keys with all different types of shaped ends...all of them work...do these cars like to eat keys? Should I be stocking up on blanks too?? Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Everywhere still has appropriate blanks, but I think the door key with the GM plastic on it pictured above is what is discontinued. You can still get them without the plastic, obviously... Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 25, 2006 Author Report Posted February 25, 2006 Sorry, it is the GM keys that are discontinued. And, of course I want OEM. I bought some from that dude before worked in my CS Where they the same ones in the picture. The only reason I'm looking is because my dealer told me the ignition keys are discontinued. Yup exactally as shown and ya i was told there discontinued also so i stocked up on both ignition and door keys So will that key in the picture also work for the door? Because every stock W-body I have seen has been just metal. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 You can always have a "hardware store" key cut and go to your nearest locksmith and buy the little black plastic "GM" cover for it. At least the locksmith I used to frequent had 'em (they never had the actual keys with the plastic coating, just the separate covers that slid over the head of the key...) Quote
ToroToro Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Yeah my hardware store ( Ace I think ) had them too. I haven't been there in years so I dunno if they carry em anymore. I really dont like the smaller plastic covered door keys anyways... I think the odd shaped metal ones that came with my car are a little more user friendly as far as being able to turn the stiff locks on my car. Quote
WhiteMonteZZZ Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 Yeah like I said, the head of the door key makes ZERO difference. The blank is the same (provided you get the blank with the correct letter, which will only be B, D, H, K) and that's all that matters. Hell, you can cut and weld a F*RD key head onto the blank and it'll function just the same. Ignition blanks are only: A, C, E, J Door/trunk/glovebox blanks are only: B, D, H, K Hope this helps. -WhiteMonteZZZ Quote
