Guest TurboSedan Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 DaveFromColorado, i could be wrong but it's my understanding that any 5-speed behind a 2.8/3.1 V6 in a J/L/W-body is the Getrag 282. most 4-cylinder/5-speed cars on the other hand got the weaker Isuzu 282, except for the 5-speeds mated to the Turbo 2.0L and the HO Quad-4 engines, which also recieved the stronger Getrag 282. of course, the Getrag 282 from a HO-Q4 or Turbo 2.0L could not be used unless the bellhousing was swapped over for the V6 version. there are also different gear ratios and FDRs between them all which of course should be considered. not sure if it matters, but my old '88 2.8/5-speed Corsica did have RPO code MG2 on the SPID label denoting Getrag 282 5-speed. That's what I've always understood as well. Personally, the 282 behind the W41 Quad 4 is an awesome transmission, but only if you dont mind swapping the bellhousings over. Quote
5speedz34 Posted February 25, 2006 Report Posted February 25, 2006 It's not that the 284 isn't rebuildable, it's just that its not worth the money to do it, and most shops won't do it. No, there are no shops out there all you can do is take it to GM and get it swapped. Quote

I must've been misinformed then ... and I don't mind admitting when I'm wrong. Altho, with the extremely large size of the bearings in the Isuzu trans, rebuilding one with some spur gears, or the even better harringbone gears would be awesome. --Dave. Quote
