timdjohn
Hello, this subject may very well be posted but I was unable to find it listed. I am new to the w-body and have a few questions. I bought a 1992 Grand Prix SE with the 3.1L V6 and 4 speed automatic. The car is loaded with all the options, aero kit, moonroof power everything. Body is in excellent condition as well. The main issue is the transmission is toast on it. I would really like to drop a 5 speed manual into this car as it will go with future plans of suspension mods etc. the engine has only 80k on it and it runs and sound like new, so I didn’t want to have to look for a 3.4L to rebuild and hook to the 5 speed. I see that the 5 speed only came in the early years with the 2.8 and the 3.4 only. But will the 5 speed match up fine to the 3.1L with little modification? Also if I was to replace the tranny with another automatic will the 4T60E electronic transmission work in the pre 94 cars? Thanks guys for any help. 19Cutlass94
the 5spd will bolt right up to the 3.1. No modding needed. You better off just going with the 4T60 tranny and not the 4T60-E

Cool, I was hoping the 5 speed would bolt up. do I need to look for the one from a 3.4 or will the one from the 2.8 be just fine hooked to a 3.1? I think the biggiest problem is installing the pedals.

I think the biggiest problem is installing the pedals. All you have to do is make a hole in the firewall for the clutch pedal. Other than that, I believe it should be pretty straight forward if you are putting in a 282 or 284 MTX. I also agree that slick's new avatar is absolutely amazing. lol
jeremy
I would get a 282 tranny from a 2.8/3.

Just so I am able to search for one in my area a it easier if i know what cars it may have come in.
92LuminaRS
Yeah, you don't want one from te 3.4 because it's a higher-revving engine
dbtk2
Yeah, you don't want one from te 3.4 because it's a higher-revving engine It reving higher has nothing to do with why doesn't want it. The cost of them and the fact that they aren't rebuildable is mainly the reason why he doesn't want the 284 from the 3.4's. Shawn

And GM wonders why Toyota is about to claim as the largest auto manufacture. I take it I can rebuild the trans out o the 2.8? also will the manual trans from the 2.8 hook up to the 3.4? I take it I can rebuild the trans out o the 2.8? also will the manual trans from the 2.8 hook up to the 3.4 IIRC: there are just no rebuild kits available for the 284....and yes you can put a 282 with a LQ1

92LuminaRS
I could have gotten a whole baretta with the 5 speed and 2.8L for $30 but I was told that it was a junk tranny and not to bother...

I I'm pretty sure all the J-body's got the Isuzu transmissions - it's a clean little transmission, extremely rebuildable, and the bearings for it are WAY bigger then what you'd expect, and the gears are a bit wider - helical cuts have a steeper helix angle so it's a quieter trans, but the gears themselves put too much axial load on the bearings because of that. I always wanted to take an Isuzu trans and rebuild it with some custom made herringbone gears - that'd be quiet and strong as hell. --Dave. slick
It's not that the 284 isn't rebuildable, it's just that its not worth the money to do it, and most shops won't do it.
