f_399
Man do the brakes in these cars wear out! I just put in new pads last Dec and they are already making that chirping sound that warns you when the brakes are worn out Is that normal? I just heard it chirping yesterday and will change the pads this afternoon... i hope it doesnt damage the discs.
Crazy K
front brakes will wear faster if the rear brakes aren't working. If you rear has drums, you need to be rolling backwards and apply to brakes a couple times to adjust. (although some cars adjust when you apply the parking brake)
GutlessSupreme
I just bend the wear tabs back to they stop annoying me just don't forget to keep an eye on the pads! but yea, make sure your rear brakes are actually doing their job, or else you're going to continue eating pads and rotors. Rear brake problems are usually only typical between '88 and '93, but the drums can't be the greatest things either...
19Cutlass94
I duno, Ive had these pads and rotors on for atleast 2 yrs now, and still have plently of pad left :shurg:
jeremy
do the rear brakes work properly? if they do and the fronts are already worn, i would check the rotors and if they are still fine I would question your driving/braking habits.... I replaced the pads/rotors/calipers on my cutty when I bought it and when I sold it two years later, there was still a TON of pad left all the way around. f_399
had all 4 brakes serviced in dec, the car did brake better after coz my rear brakes were so bad that all the force were at the front brakes 2 months of usage is nothing! could it just be dirt? it weird might clean it with brake cleaner and a high pressure hose
Crazy K
Two months????????? Are you sure they actually replaced the pads, and didn't just bleed the system? in fact..... take a close look and make sure you are mistaking brake pad squeal for the indicator noise. DiscoStudd
Does that LTZ have rear discs? Second question, did you get the old pads back when you had them replaced? The only way you'll know for sure if your pads are worn down is by taking the wheel off and looking at their thickness. You'll want to inspect the outer pad actually. On a "floating pin" style of brake caliper like our cars have (pistons on the inner side) the outer pads naturally wear out faster than the inner pads. This time when you change the pads, be sure to heavily lubricate the "slider" bolts (the bolts that attach the caliper to the caliper bracket) with brake caliper grease. When your outer pads wear out quickly and the inners still look like new, that's a sign of the caliper sliders not being lubricated properly. ... f_399
ok will do that thanks guys
DiscoStudd
And while you have those wheels off, throw a little anti-sieze compound on your lug studs. It'll make removing the lug nuts easier the next time (and the time after that, and the time after that, and so, on and so forth...)
f_399
whats a good brake pad brand?
THe_DeTAiL3R
I just had cheapo whitebox semi-metallic pads and rotors put on my car back in Oct 04. They still feel just as good as new . Same deal with my old car, I had it for like 4+ years and never did the brakes, even with the rear disks being shitty. My 95 will sometimes make a LOUD high pitched moaning noise when an stopping in reverse, but I think it's just dry brake pads cause they are fine after that... DiscoStudd
whats a good brake pad brand?I swear by Raybestos. The PG Plus is a good "compromise" pad, meaning it has relatively low dust, makes no noise, and has a good lifespan. Now granted it won't stop the car as well as a carbon metallic or semi-metallic pad, or last as long as a ceramic pad, but like I said it's a good trade-off... f_399
went back to the shop (pepboys) and told them about it they inspected it and it was unusual wear on the left front they will redo the whole front brakes tom under warranty they put raybestos
White93z34
i did the front brakes on my car well over a year ago now, i used some cheepo rotors and limited lifetime pads of some variety, i want to say that was at 120,000 or so, and i just turned 150,000 this morning and the pads still have alot left in them. however since they are the limited lifetime pads they are hard as all get out and have been tearing up my rotors, they are quite scored now and i can tell that they are starting to warp. so next time no more lifetime pads for me. Both my Cutlass and my STE did/do that. Driver's front caliper. I replaced it with a caliper left over from my '96 strut swap and it stopped. Just wish I had another one laying around to swap onto the STE.. it's embarrasing. mine's not so high pitched i guess... but it is a moaning "WHOOOOMP" noise. NeonKnight
i think my rear brakes are not working right either... the car feels like crap stopping, sometimes it feels good and othertimes its like wtf?! it changes in weather too... since the rear was done by Big O (i have to drive 30 miles to get to that exact store...) i have to go back out there, i complained to them 2 times already for noises in the rear and shitty brakes... they tell me everything is fine. i put brand new fronts on a couple months back. New Delco rotors, and new Carbon metallic pads. when you stop in the car you kinda have to keep pushing a littlre more the closer you get to something... unless you stop 500000 feet away then you can lightly tap the brakes... yet you still have to push them pretty far down to get to it. and once your pushing that far done, if you apply a little more pressure you can make the pedal hit the floor and you can feel it. and to think i drive fast in this lol... not anymore. i think it might be a bad Master cylinder, and the rears are prob toast
Crazy K
rear disc or drum?? for drum, have you attempted to apply to brakes in reverse a few times? (or apply the parking brake?) in fact, if you have rear discs, you should apply the parking brake as well, as it factors into adjusting them.... NeonKnight
i have rear disc, and i always apply my parking break ALWAYS. when the car is parked anywhere... i apply it. soon enough i will do a rear upgrade to 95+ brakes... maybe that will be the best of me.
