19Cutlass94 Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 That the noise Im hearing from 40-45 in OD is from the lifters being stuck and the engine it turning at just the right speed so that it kinda of amps the sound? Ive also thought it might have been the knock sensor, but it cant be since it only does it between those speeds. Then I thought about the timing, which it could be that too. Maybe it firing before it suppose to or after. So maybe the timing might be just alittle off. But do you think its worth it to replace the lifters when I do the gaskets in the spring? I know its a lot of money for those little suckers and Ive been told that they usually dont go bad, but they will if no oil gets to them. So right now Im looking at either the lifters or the timing. Anything else it could be? Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 what kind of noise is it you're hearing? Pinging, knocking, whining, ? --Dave. Quote
jdcutty Posted February 20, 2006 Report Posted February 20, 2006 If it is a whining, check your tranny fluid. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 20, 2006 Author Report Posted February 20, 2006 Naa its not a whining noise, its more of a knocking. I know you guys heard the lifter tick before, well its like that but louder, deeper and maybe a littler faster. Quote
1990lumina Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 Like that video I posted of my Lumina awhile back??? Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Posted February 21, 2006 Like that video I posted of my Lumina awhile back??? Do you have the link for that again, and Ill let ya know. Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 it's probably a rod knock ... I had a rod knock on a 3.1 of mine for almost 2 months before it pushed itself through the block - it's a big deal, and you'll wanna get it fixed before something else goes wrong. --Dave. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Posted February 21, 2006 But if it was a rod knock, wouldnt I hear it all the time? Instead of just from 40-45 in OD? Another thing I just thought of...... Could it be a bad mount? Because everyday when I shift from park, drive, etc I get like a metal vibration. Like maybe a trans mount bad? (which Ill inspect next time I have time to) Quote
DaveFromColorado Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 could be so many different things tho... could be the chain in the transmission, or the stovepipe, or the converter clutch itself chattering, or even the differential making noises ... so many different things, it's hard to tell without seeing it firsthand. --Dave. 19Cutlass94 Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Posted February 21, 2006 yeah I know what your saying. But when I hopefully get a video of it (if that can even tell the story) maybe we can go from there. But I think a good place to start would to be just checking the mounts. BTW, if this engine went, that just means 3400 city. (maybe DOHC if Im lucky just I know where I can get one) Quote
1990lumina Posted February 21, 2006 Report Posted February 21, 2006 http://media.putfile.com/Excess-engine-knockingticking My car sounds like that on all cold starts....quiets down once it warms up.....when I don't have the fan going for defrost I can hear a faint tapping sound at all engine speeds as well....my car has been like this for two years (probably more, but I've only owned it 2 years) Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted February 21, 2006 Author Report Posted February 21, 2006 Ohh your just talking about the lifter tick. My car does that too, but this is much worse of a sound than that. Quote
