PCGUY112887
96 3100 in my Grand Prix, how much oil does it hold? I can't remember if it's 4 quarts or 4.5 or if i'm totally wrong. Lets say it's 4 and I want to do an oil flush, how does 3 quarts of cheap-o oil + 1 quart of kerosene and a cheap Fram or STP filter, run for 10-15min, drain then go to my Fully Synthetic Mobil-1 10W-30 and extra long Mobil filter? Thanks.
birdman
5 quarts of oil is what you need, and if you must flush it just buy the gunk oil flush stuff for like 2 bucks and leave it at that. and have you run synthectic before because if not ive heard it'll make seals leak. 94CutlassSLCoupe
4 quarts w/the stock short filter and 4.5 with the long one
DaveFromColorado
Synthetic oil doesn't actually make the seals leak, they just make the leaks more visiable... The smaller molecules of the synthetic will pass through the gaps that most conventional oil can't exactly fit through. Use the flush stuff off the shelf at wal-mart - it's just as good as kerosene (because that's basically what it is) - if you're not doing the complete flush, that stuff is just as good, and I highly recomend it. --Dave. Pontiac6KSTEAWD
Dont forget that Synthetic also softens seals, which can lead to oil leaks. Especially in the Dist Delete O-Ring area. I put synthetic in both my current cars, and within 1 day, they were both leakin from that o-ring..
PCGUY112887
I guess it would be a good idea to crosslink this thread to maybe get some more help. Grand Moff Joseph
So, not to thread jack, but what benefits does a 'oil flush' give you, and is it something that should be done on a regular interval, or only when a problem has arisen? DaveFromColorado
the reason for flushing the engine is to clean the sludge out of the smaller oil passageways, and to clean out the lifters for better longer performance. --Dave. THe_DeTAiL3R
I've always just dumped in a bottle of engine flush into the (hot) engine with the old oil still in it, run for 10min and drain... always comes out black and runny. Even if it's more than 4qts or whatever the capacity is, it woun't hurt it (don't rev it just let it idle).

PCGUY112887
Well I went to walmart and bought something called Chemtool, it looks like a ripoff of Seafoam but it was cheaper so I took a look. Can mentioned to put in oil and run idle for 3-5min then do a normal oil change. So I let the car cool to fairly cool, and add the stuff in. It poped and cracked and shot a bit out of the funnel, so I guess the inside was still warm. Read the can, mentioned having the car cool was suggested but not required. So everything looked good, put the cap back on and went to start the car. Started sorta then fell on it's ass. Tried to start again, woulden't come. Waited a few moments and tried again, still nothin. WTF?!? I sorta worried becuase the can had no seal on it, none of them did and it appears normal just a "child safe" cap so the first thought that came to mind is that someone fucked with the liquid inside and now it had something to destroy rubber or something. But went ahead and did the normal oil change, when I was done engine hesiteted for a second when tryin to start it then it started right up and now it runs fine. There is some left in the can and now i'm afraid to put the rest in the gas tank.

PCGUY112887
Has anyone else ever used Chemtool? (I'm just tryin to figure out why on earth it woulden't start just from pouring something like that into the oil, when it's meant to be used like that).
