frusciante fan Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 well it looks like i'll be driving my regal for a while and i need to replace my back struts. i'm looking for something basic and low cost, but good quality. i just came across these http://www.partsamerica.com/ProductDetail.aspx?mfrcode=MON&mfrpartnumber=71831&parttype=50&ptset=A any recommendations? 92 GP Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 holy shit, $55/piece? Damn man. I paid $191 for all four KYB GR-2's shipped to my door So, in otherwords, I, as many other forum members will, recommend KYB GR2s Quote
frusciante fan Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 the boot on one back strut has been rattling some when i go over bumps at certain speeds. do i need to replace the boot too or anything else? Quote
Canada Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 You might want to look into getting new mounts. Price your stuff though Shox.com.....sometimes they give good deals. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 the boot on one back strut has been rattling some when i go over bumps at certain speeds. do i need to replace the boot too or anything else? That's not the boot, dude, it's the upper strut mount. Keep riding around on it and this is what'll happen: And this is what the mount looks like when it's shot: My struts had no charge left in them, so when the mount let loose, the piston dropped down and allowed the rear wheel to swing on its axis. Good times? I don't think so! Replace those upper mounts while you have the struts out ... Quote
frusciante fan Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 i'm considering these. keep in mind that i'm selling this car within the next 5 months. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=8033248527&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7993656153&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT how hard is all this crap to install? Quote
DiscoStudd Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 If you're selling the car soon, then there's no sense in spending the big bucks on quality parts. As far as installation goes, there's a write-up posted in the FAQ section. Follow it and you'll have the struts in in less than 2 hours. Oh, and don't forget to buy a set of boots for those new struts! Quote
White93z34 Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 IF all goes right, then 2 hours is feeseable. theres a distinct possability that the 2 lower strut bolts are very stuck i had to remove the entire rear knuckle assembly on both sides and take a 10lb sledge to them before they would let loose. frusciante fan Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 why do i need new boots? Quote
DiscoStudd Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 why do i need new boots?Well, you don't want dirt getting near the piston seals on the new struts now, do you? But yeah, once you get road grime up inside there, kiss the new struts goodbye. The boots protect that area so none of that shit gets up inside there. See how purdy that new strut looks with its new mount and boot attached to it? The KYB brand boot contains the jounce bumper at the top end, which slides into the upper mount. The bottom end of the boot is secured to the strut body with a zip-tie... Quote
frusciante fan Posted February 19, 2006 Author Report Posted February 19, 2006 well i bought the struts and mounts, but i don't really see much for boots on ebay. i'm having a local mechanic put all this stuff on for me so i'll have him order two boots. hopefully everything will go well and i can get this car sold. it's just been sitting in my garage for the last two months and i'm waiting for probably another month or two and then i'll put it outside. Guest TurboSedan Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 fwiw since i have rear coilovers i can't use strut boots. my KYBs have at least 70,000 on them and they still seem to be fine. NOT saying you shouldn't get strut boots of course. Quote
