kuntzie Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 how many miles are they good for? i found one with ~ 160k miles on it... the whole car actually for a very very good price ( 1998 GTP black on black lrather, HUD ect for like 1300 bucks (1500 canadian), has a smashed out rear window, body is decent... has the tq star rims on it with some brand new BF goodrich Daytona i believe on them... good deal ... ( i would part the car and keep the rims and drivetrain) Quote
runt Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 They run forever. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's all going ot depend on how well the car was taken care of. I know some might argue with me, but was the Super Charger oil changed? How was the maintenance on the engine oil and other important fluids? Any signs of abuse or anything else like that? Quote

kuntzie Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Posted February 17, 2006 i wanna do a L67/ turbo and delete the supercharger anyways. but ya always serviced at GM, so it prolly been done enough Quote
JNGTP94 Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 why wouldnt you just go l36 turbo??? ask some of the guys on clubgp as not all of them make it over here garunteed you will get good info Quote
kuntzie Posted February 17, 2006 Author Report Posted February 17, 2006 the l67 is a stronger engine and tranny im told... Quote
sl3196 Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 I beat the shit out of mine and at 123k it's still running great. If you plan on modding it with those miles I would probably rebuild it first though. Quote

Any signs of abuse or anything else like that? x2 check the SC oil and run your fingers in it and feel out smooth it is Checking the S/C isn't just as easy as pulling a dipstick. You have to remove the bolt and then suck the fluid out. It also smells fucking horrendous. S/C oil is designed to last the life of the car (or the coupler, whichever comes first), so why bother even attempting to do this? And as far as the transmission goes, just either get the tranny from an L67 or get one of ZZP's beefed up packages. Quote
sl3196 Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Shaun you don't need to suck out the fluid if your just checking it lol. Take off the plug bolt and make sure the oil is at the bottom of the bolt threads. And if you plan on a turbo don't even worry about changing it. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 Ah. Didn't know that. I've only changed fluid, never really tried to check it. Quote
kuntzie Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 enough said... ill buy it.. anyone need anyparts from 1998 GTP? willl the seats work in a first Generation w? Quote
White93z34 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 i almost want to say that you would be better off cleaning it up really good, replace the back window and resell it for a profit. Quote
kuntzie Posted February 18, 2006 Author Report Posted February 18, 2006 ill post some pics and you can tell me what u think ( i wannna use basicly everything off the car though lol.... for skalors car when i get it... i wana change the supeension over to the 97+ style so i can get koni adjustables, and upgrade to 12" brakes (f-body style)... i hear it can be changed over fairly easily, the tires on it alone are at like 90 % tread and the rims... i just love the look of them. not to mention parting it out i could prob make alot of my money back off it.. (supercharger, exhaust, HUD, CD player, bumpers, headlights, tailights, fog fights, easily can make my coin back.. Quote
patgizz Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 they last till they catch on fire Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 I would fix the bitch up as long as the body is in decent shape... Quote
sl3196 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 they last till they catch on fire Ya ok. You know must of the time they catch on fire is because people don't put shit back together right? Quote
skalor Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 I would say that the life expectency of an L67 is fairly good. Now, the life expectency of the trans tends to be a lot lower though. I think that the mileage is a little high to be worth doing a higher HP(~400 HP) turbo build, but then again I don't like to do things more than once should something happen. Anyways, I'm doing a turbo L67 into my '89 Ciera, hence why I'm selling you the TGP. I'm just swapping in an L67 first and then it will get the turbo over next winter. I actually already have the turbo, it's a Turbonetics 60-1 with P-trim turbine and .68 A/R turbine housing. Here are a couple comparison picture of it compared to the TGPs T-25. Quote
mfewtrail Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 I've seen stock and modded L67's with well over 200,000 miles on them here. I would check out the engine(compression, leakdown, etc. just to be on the safe side) and then go from there with your project. Quote
Bossman429 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 Mileage means very little on these cars if they have been taken care of. The Buick 3.8 (and derivatives) is a very reliable motor. I parted out a 90 Bonne with a 3.8 (LN3 maybe?) with 324K on the clock! Quote
patgizz Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 they last till they catch on fire Ya ok. You know must of the time they catch on fire is because people don't put shit back together right? H U M O R gotta toss some fun at the expense of the L67 around once in a while with the ripping the dohc takes on being "unreliable POS" by people who've never owned one. 8) Quote
AWeb80 Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 i wanna do a L67/ turbo and delete the supercharger anyways. but ya always serviced at GM, so it prolly been done enough If ya want any info on the Turbo 3800....ask Mr. Hat on Clubgp....he did his all by himself. I've posted pics before of his car.... On 7psi, he ran a 12.31....and the motor is built to take ~24 psi....he just has kinks to work out with boost controllers and such.... More pics here Quote
ihateallmustangs Posted February 18, 2006 Report Posted February 18, 2006 From personal experiance... Anything with the name tag 3800 or 3.8!!! good for over 400,000k without oil changes and good for far beyond that with regular maintence... Quote
Crazy K Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 I call bullshit! but they do have the potential if at least lax amintence was done to do quite a distance. on my high mileage W thread, someone sad there was 470,000 miles on someone's 3800??? wow!i Quote

Even the japs can hardly master the reliablilty and such of the 3800 series. They are great motors and have a track record to prove it. Come call my 90 rivieras 398,000k odometer a liar. Quote
Crazy K Posted February 19, 2006 Report Posted February 19, 2006 I called bullshit on the lack of oil changes. I know they will go 400,000 klicks, or 240,000 miles if reasonalbe maintence is done. Quote
