97loudcut
I have a 3100 SFI and I know it is a pain in the butt to make an intake for so I just want to connect a K&N cone filter to the MAF. I know it can be done because I saw someone on here with a cone filter attached to their MAF. Does anyone know off hand what size filter I should get? I want it to be cone or cylinder shaped. ToroToro
Like everyone said in your other thread, 3 inches.
SigEpCutlass
If you going to be making a WAI (Warm Air Intake) you're wasting your money. Infact, it decreases performance for most driving conditions, with just incredibly marginal gains at the top end. Now if you're going to have a FWI (Fender Well Intake) that actually grabs colder air from around the headlights or lower, then it would be worthwhile. Pwmin has made a custom one before, as has AWeb80. Talk to one of those guys if you want to do that. CAI...obviously it's worth it. If you are looking for cheap marginal performance gain and better fuel economy, then just save yourself the trouble and get a K&N drop in filter. Everyone that's used one here has been pleased with it. They're dyno proven to give you better performance.
MonteCarloChick
I have a WAI and I notice a big difference in power. And most importantly an evil growl during OD or WOT
snowboard_pro6
I have the drop in K&N filter but i was thinking of taking out the airbox and connecting a HKS super mega flow filter would this work?

Not familiar with that setup & that would still might be considered a WAI, because it's still probably close enough to the engine to be pulling in warmer air. Pics of said filter? I definitely noticed a huge loss. 1-2 second INCREASE to 60mph. Then again, I still use one from time to time for the sound effects. But SigEpCutlass is right and you should be aware of the fact that OHV 60V6s dont like WAIs...
19Cutlass94
Exactly why I have made one. Trying to figure out my CAI. But even a stock air box with K%N drop in is going to be better than a WAI.
Euro
yeah..i'd just stick with a drop-in filter..and mod the stock airbox out a little IIRC its been proven by a few different people here that a drop-in K&N is better than a WAI
TeeJay3800
I don't know about a 3100, but a 3.1 is very suspeptible to changes to the intake system. When I took the snorkel off my airbox, I lost a TON of low- and mid-range torque. It's amazing how big a difference such a small change made. Like everyone has said, the best thing for a pushrod 60° V-6 is a drop-in K&N. Then play around with various airbox mods to see what you like the best. 95oldsVan
I cant see the filter even giving any gain unless the stock set up were super restrictive.I used a K&N on my 86 L98 357 TPI modded corvette and saw no gains. A moderator on the corvette forum tried them in his car on the 1/4 mile track and did back to back testing and seen no real improvements on his LT1.He's an advid racer and drags all the time.he tried a bunch of things and reported them with real world reports and 1/4 mile track slip times. Granted, these are different engines, but the fact is,the General always gives you stock filters that can flow more than your engine can realistically handle in the real world. If anything, they look nice or enhance induction sound on throttle.Thats it.I ended up selling my K&N and going back to stock, even with a cut out filter lid to enhance flow.Didnt see a thing or feel a thing.Just alot of noise sucking in under the hood area. Unless you have a modded engine that really needs larger CFM flow through the filter that your stocker cant support, youre not going to be gaining much from those mods.Thats been my belief and I seen it on my own car and read others. Canada
Instead of talking about how products felt, or what they noticed....lets post some actual fact. Below is a dyno chart from my Beretta. Then, it had the orginal 3100 engine, Fast Forward Performance's underdrive pulley, a Ghetto Fabrications 2.25" mandrel bent exhaust with high flow cat and Dynomax Ultraflo muffler. Not exactly stock....but not really that modified. I dynoed it with a stock paper air filter (brand new Fram) (#2), a borrowed K&N drop-in (#3), and my RSM underhood intake (#4). RSM's intake... There are benefits to getting a proper intake....but just slapping a cone filter on the end of the MAF won't hurt either. Last summer, I bought a proper intake from Tranzgenic.....this company offered to make CAIs for the W cars, but YOU guys told them to piss off. It helped, I don't know how much.....haven't dynoed it yet. Don't ghetto something together.....you'll just end up not liking it in the end. Buy a K&N drop-in, or an actual CAI.
