92LuminaRS Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Found this while looking for something to spend my $20 coupon on... http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=ACC%2D140017&N=115+4294908216+4294907614+4294924928&autoview=sku What are the stockers rated at? These are rated @ 45,000max  Quote
GutlessSupreme Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Don't waste your money. Stockers are as good as you'll ever need. Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Yeah ignition coils are ONE thing on our cars that are actually hard to improve on. Quote
chadz34 Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Yeah ignition coils are ONE thing on our cars that are actually hard to improve on. Already had one go. Quote
TeeJay3800 Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 Yeah ignition coils are ONE thing on our cars that are actually hard to improve on. Already had one go. Well of course they'll fail eventually. I am saying that there's no point in replacing the stock coils with aftermarket coils from a performance standpoint. Quote
turby Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 What are the stockers rated at? These are rated @ 45,000max  40,000 I believe. Quote
Vegeta Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 I had 2 accel coils die within a week. Im not the only one that has had no luck with them either. oldskoolgp had his msd coils fail in very little time too. Aftermarket coils = suck. Quote
brianhasadd Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 How long do our ignition coils last? Quote
99RegalGS Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 My old Regal had 163k when I sold it. And it still had origional coils and ICM. Quote
brianhasadd Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 I found a Thermostat on http://www.PFYC.com yesterday, is it a waste of money to change that out?? or is it actually a good thing to change it. I was going to order it but I wanted to see if it is worth it. Thanks Quote
92LuminaRS Posted February 16, 2006 Author Report Posted February 16, 2006 I had one coil pack die on one of my other luminas with 170,000 miles on it. Replaced it and kept on going strong! I just saw that coil and it looked like pure sex. I know the aftermarket sucks for our cars Quote
digitaloutsider Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 The Bonneville I sold to Sean had the Grand Prix's 180k mile stockers on them. brianhasadd, I'm not positive, but I'm going to guess the Series III also comes with a 195º thermostat. Your best bet with a stock PCM is to run one rated at 180º. 195º is a bit too warm, and anything below 180º will most likely set an SES light. However, $10 for a thermostat (plus $5 for the little o-ring) is ridiuclously expensive. Get one from a local parts store. Quote
Crazy K Posted February 16, 2006 Report Posted February 16, 2006 YEAH... The aftermarket coils suck ass. my lumina is still running stong with what I assume to be the original coils at 209,600 miles. They are at least OEM, that is.... no problems... and lighting fast starts. In all my experience.... I've seen two bad coils. One was on my vert, and it was drenched in oil, and the other was on my 95 CS, and it had mositure rust out one of the pegs. I cheated on the 95, I sanded it, and dielectic greased it. it works fine Quote
Turbocharged400sbc Posted February 17, 2006 Report Posted February 17, 2006 we upgraded the magnavox ignition on the rear 3800 to the delco setup from a donor car with 160+K...works and starts better than the magnavox setup ever could...the ones on the 3100 are original 76K units... i could be mistaken but i remember sumthin about the oem coils fer the L67 engines (SSEi etc) are better (higher firing Kv) than the NA engines... and guys rec them as an upgrade and as being better than the MSD/ACCEL units... also firing voltage of a coil is only one aspect of its performance...spark duration and how many milli-jouls of current affect cylinder burn performance/lightoff if anything the improvment of going to a CD ignition with 3 sparks per cylinder (multiple discharge) firing would be better from a performance standpoint as it increases the amount of spark per degrees of crank rotation making sure all of the fuel is burned. I noticed a big improvment going from HEI to a MSD 6AL/Mallory unilite distributor setup in my Nova Regards, James Quote
