bigdman
my exhaust on my 3.1 cutlass consists of a cherry bomb turbo II muffler where the stock muffler was located and no cat. the whole system is 1 1/2 inch pipe, it is small and these 3.1s have a unique sound, they cackle around 2500 rpms but with my current setup it sounds like i have one of those ricer mufflers back there and it sucks. i dont even like driving it now. anyone know a way to fix this. SigEpCutlass
put a stock pipe on there & a muffler from a u-pull it....
bigdman
you mean a stock muffler from a junkyard right? the pipe is all stock except for where the cat is, but it is the same size as the downpipe.
NeonKnight
stock pipe on your car should not be 1 1/2... on m lumina stock is 2.25 and i have flowmasters to fit. best bet is go to the junkyard and findyourself the pipe and muffler. cut it all off, try to get the downpipe also (if your pipe really is 1 1/2) when your there take the muffler bracket also, this will allow you to do a dual exhaust. have an exhaust shop put it on for you, or you do it yourself. it is simple to do if you have the tools. no welding needed if you do it right also

FYI: the stock pipe is 2.25". Neon is correct.
Hairdo12
I disagree, I put a euro 3.4 exhaust on my car and that pipe was 2.25... my old pipe was 2 inches. I had to put a 2.25 to 2 inch reducer on to get the euro 3.4 to clamp up. I ran to the garage and measured and the stock pipe for my 3.1 is indeed 2 inches. bigdman
it might be 2 inch but i know it's not 2.25, i can measure it though. i know the pipe is very small. i have a custom setup in the back that allows for dual exhaust which is what i had on there but too loud. i also had the same problem with my duals that i am having now! i have about 6 different mufflers laying in my garage and i tryed them all on the car yesterday and the all do the same thing, they rattle like crazy, it's not like theres loose metal in there but it's that 3.1 sound only worse. i have read of people upgrading pipe size and eliminating that sound but is there any other way to do it? besides a wisper quiet exhaust. sorry for the long post
Vegeta
Put a resonator on there. I have an 18" long resonator on my car now and its got no raspiness at all. I have a droning sound around 2000 but its only about 300 RPM range for this so im cool with it. DOHC motor, but still a 60V6 (and I used to have a 3.1 so I know all about it).
