91GPSTE
Ok, I got a question regarding exhaust sound. I noticed that all early 3.1 have that rattling drown to it but 94+ have a much quiter note. Was just wondering if it has something to do with exhaust parts or it is all coming from the motor. Can the sound be made less noticeble?
THe_DeTAiL3R
Well I know that my 88 GP had that sound you're talking about, but my 95 has a resonator... I'm sure the 3100s and other newer engines have a different sound from different exhaust manifolds, heads, etc, but I think the resonator is the real difference. 1990lumina
I always just thought it was because my muffler is worn out and falling apart internally lol
z34Phoenix
yes the resonators make a big diff in the sound.
92LuminaRS
I personally love the raspyness of the 3.1's compared to the 3100 series engines, but I guess I'm just wierd
91GPSTE
I always just thought it was because my muffler is worn out and falling apart internally lol I thought so too until I changed the entire exhaust and it still rattled. Where is this resonator located?
94CutlassSLCoupe
the resonator is right behind the passenger side rear wheel...it basically looks like a section of exhaust that has an increased diameter I will be ditching my resinator and converting to duals fairly soon...My 2.8 CS sounded so much better
chadz34
My new Lumina is alot quieter than my old one. Same engine (3.4 DOHC) as well. I like it kind of loud, and the 96 isn't as loud as my 92.
EviLette
Ummm... My 92 Grand Prix SE rattles occasionally, but only when it's idling. The rest of the exhaust is a low rumble sound... dual exhaust, cat-back system... umm... It does like to pop when I rev it up, when it's dropping back down to normal idle range... but my mufflers need replaced... I do have a rattle in my engine... but I'm pretty sure its my lifters tapping, due to needing a new head on my car. The valve cover on the front doesn't seat properly, one lobe is missing off of the head...
91GPSTE
Sorry to bring the topic back to the top but my tail pipe has rusted and I am thinking of installing one with a resonator, will a newer one fit my 91'?
91GPSTE
Any help here? I am going to wreckers tomorrow to look for a 94-96 pipe and if I can't find one I will be buying a new one buy there is a $30 price difference and the new one is actually cheaper. In any case they cost $130-$160 new.
jeremy
all 1G w-body exhausts should be interchangeable
91GPSTE
Nice. Got me a tail pipe out of 95' GP for 20 bucks. Sure beats paying $160 for a new one.
