herb427sc
Has anybody tried cutting the auto shifter off?? You could shorten it about 3 inches.

Psych0matt
i thought about it, and want to. Not three inches though, maybe 1 or 1.5. I have long arms and it would make it just slightly more comfortable, as well as better access to the cubby. did you do this? and if so... pics? herb427sc
Have not done it yet. I have an extra shifter and 1 in a GP that is damaged, so I have two to work with. It is 4 inches from the bottom of the handle to the top of counsel, so 2 to 3 inches would not be a problem.
fastbird232
Never heard of anyone wanting a short-throw shifter for an automatic.
terryk2003
Never heard of anyone wanting a short-throw shifter for an automatic. :withstupid: ...but, its not really short throw...its just a shorter shifter...
digitaloutsider
If you have a booted shifter, it'd look great. The one in my Bonneville and the one in my buddy's GTP was waaaay too long. Most newer automatic cars have short shifters. They're just more aesthetically appealing, IMHO. I don't see the point in doing it to a non-booted shifter. It's going to look bad no matter what you do. There are a few people who have done it over on ClubGP. I'd go ask there.
cutlass_driver91
yea the shifter in my 91 cutty is pretty short and when i added the pilot shift knob to it i had to rais the knob up al most an inc cus it being too short the bottom of the shift knob was bending the platic shift cover

Oh. Thought that was what he meant... bleh. An inch shorter might look a little better now that I think about it, but probably not worth all the hassle of actually doing it. cutlsp
i am going to shorten my extra shifter soon and put it in my cutlass
herb427sc
Started this project today. No pictures now. The only hard part will be: Shortening the nylon linkage that goes down the center of the shortened shifter. This will actually make a short throw shifter because it is a smaller radius. It should also look better because it won't stick up so much..
TeeJay3800
I think a shorter shifter might look a little better, but I can't see any other advantage on an automatic. On a manual, even if the throws aren't any shorter, I can still see the advantage of a shorter shifter.
GnatGoSplat
One of my coworkers has a 94 Camaro w/manual tranny and the previous owner shortened the shifter. He hates it, wishes he could turn it back to factory.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Switching from my factory 95 "cobra head" shifter to my old 1988 "T-shaped" shifter actually made it shorter. Here's the "T" shifter, note it just reaches the heater controls in height.. Heres the old (factory) shifter, it goes about halfway up the heater controls..
