TeeJay3800
I think I might have a left-front wheel bearing going bad. It makes a slight humming sound that I notice while coasting when getting off the freeway. Also, when going around a right-hand bend, I hear a little vibration and mild grinding feeling (like while going around an exit loop). I don't know much about this stuff, so does this sound like it might be a wheel bearing? If not, not what else would it be?
cutlsp
check your cv axel too i think mine made that noise when it went bad i don't remember
jeremy
when I had a bad bearing on my '89 GP it would "knock" with every rotation of the wheel, the faster I went the more it would knock until it was a constant humming... I have the problem now. I sorta temporarily fixed it by spraying the bearings with silicon lubricant not wd40 lol.
TeeJay3800
I don't hear any knocking, its just like a slight humming sound and a little vibration I usually notice coasting while getting off the freeway. Also, whenever turning right around a bend. At this point I don't know if its a bad bearing or CV joint. Any tips on how to diagnose this myself? Tru2Chevy
If it's a wheel bearing, it should get quieter when you make a turn to the side of the bad bearing. When my left front bearing was going bad, a left turn would quiet it down. Now my right one is going bad, and a right turn quiets it right down. - Justin
TeeJay3800
That's exactly how mine is. It also seems to get louder when I hit the brakes and more weight is transferred to the front.
DaveFromColorado
the left front wheel bearing is (and has been for quite some time) bad on our 92 N-body, makes noise all the time, it's been getting louder for the past year, makes the same noise you're describing. CV axel's typically click, not really moan or grind as much. --Dave.
TeeJay3800
Some people I've talked to about this make it seem like the wheel could fly off at any moment. I'm surprised to hear you've been driving your car so long in this condition. Is this something that needs to be fixed right away, or can it be put off for a while? joey b
with the axle nut on one side of the hub and the axle on the other side of the bearing housing, I wouldn't worry about losing your wheel. It can wait.
terryk2003
deffinatly sounds like a wheel bearing...i would get it fixed ASAP...even IF the wheel couldn't fall off (which, i'm sure it IS possible to have it come apart...it'll pull the CV shaft out of the trans if it does), it'll also cause irregular tire wear....deffinatly fix it! TeeJay3800
I definitely will fix it soon. It's just nice to know that imminent catastrophic failure isn't right around the corner. Thanks for the help guys!

Thats exactly what my car is doing on the LF, but no humming... TeeJay, Glad to hear you got it fixed. $200 isnt all that bad either

I'm surprised to hear you've been driving your car so long in this condition. Is this something that needs to be fixed right away, or can it be put off for a while? Just to keep ya updated ... unless you've got lots of play in the wheel bearing you don't have to worry about it flying off ... the only two wheels I've personally ever seen fall off of a car that was in motion was one on a Celebrity that was missing 3 of the 5 wheel studs. and the other was on a lowered Civic, and the tie rod end let go. I've never personally seen one let go from a wheel bearing. Anyhow ... $200 for a halfshaft and install is a good price! --Dave.
TeeJay3800
Yeah I was happy with it. The wheel bearing issue is still there (still hums), but now no more clicking/grinding when I turn the wheel sharp.
