well i have a complete strut/knuckle assembly here and i am trying to figure out why it would do that....but it really doesn't look like anything would hold the strut mount down other than that plate that you took off the top. it should be really easy to push back down right? it shouldn't be under spring pressure.

basically looks to me like the gas charge of the strut is what pushed it up since no plate is there to hold it down, but i'm probably wrong.

well i took the othere side off and it stays there even if i push up and down on the car i think the plate is there to protect the hood if the strut mount goes out it wont damage the hood

That shouldnt be a problem from what i see. The strut mount just tucks into the upper strut mount retainer. It usually fits snug which is why it doesnt usually come out. I wouldn't worry about it. If you are worried just get another strut mount from a J/Y and see if you can find one that will fit snug in there.

the new KYB strut mounts i have fit VERY tightly into the upper spring seat/retainer thing (it's not a bearing fwiw). the old ones slip in and out easily. i'd have to agree with pabz - i don't think it's really a problem.

how much were ure kyb strut mounts? ill probly replace them anyway with the speed sensor, tie rod, and tires so i wont have to mess with em

The strut mount will pop up if they are gas-charged struts. I just took out my factory struts, and they were fluid filled, they just operate by viscous damping so no gas charge. If you have factory fluid filled struts, they shouldn't pop up. If they are gas charged, they should. They don't have much pressure to them. You could probably push them in by hand, but its easier to jack the car up, let the suspension pull the strut down, and then put the plate on

I was on here 7 months ago asking this same question...about the strut rod and nut floating freely and only held down by the cover. Never got an answer. Mine clunked as the rod bounced into the cover while going over bumps. I jury rigged a setup to cushion the rod and nut, eliminating the clunk. [note: mine are original struts]

But I do believe this.....the freaking think IS broken and is not okay. It is in a "get by" mode, but it is broken for sure. I don't believe for a second that the cover cap is designed to take the load of the front of the car's suspension.

There must be a mounting plate that is accessable from the top or from the underside that is broken.

"And that's all I have to say about that."
