OK I JUST GOT THIS CAR and have had many chevys pontiac6000s and celebritys and never had this happen. going 70 it says im doing 115 90 its no longer on the speedo (wife in front thats how i know how fast i was going) when i hit full speedo it the fuel cut out gets reached and cuts out till i slow down. is this the speed sensor? or something entirely different?

thanks

UPDATE alrighty i found the problem and it was a prom/memcal chip the speed is dead on and just horray . theold comp was probly from a newer car as i got 2 chips from the yard new one and same year is perfect hope this can help someone else one day david

Yes, I would be inclinded to say that you may have some faulty speed sensors. I've never had to replace mine, so I'm not sure how to advise you to do that. Try doing a search on the forum to see what else you can dig up too.

Btw, try not to use too many CAPS. On the internet that means you're yelling. Welcome to our forum too.

I put the UB3 cluster in my car, and now it reads 5mph faster than what the car is actually moving. I don't know why because the stock cluster still reads exact.

Is this the same problem?

I not 100% sure how the speedos work on these cars, so someone correct me if i'm wrong, but the speed sensor sends pulses to the ECM, which than detects the speed of the pulses and that detects your speed. If your hitting the speed limiter, when your not really going that fast, i would say that there is something wrong with the ECM. I have never seen a defective speed sensor that read overly high. I am under the impression that if the sensor fails, the speedo just wont work.

regal gs 1989 i think is right. i thought it would just fail too. as for the cluster i dont know for sure i just got it yesterday. but its way over 5 mph more. i will try the speed sensor first as the car has 179k on it. when i hit over 115 mph on the cluster the fuel cut off kicks in.

It's more than likely someone changed the PCM with a used one, and did not transfer the MEMCAL removeable chip in the PCM from the original one to the "new" one. You would need one from a 1990 car with the same transmission.

Are the tires the correct size? If you have the original trunk lid, it should be on a sticker tag on the lid... read it and compare your tire size.... in fact post it here, I can find a chart to get the exact measurements...

and apparently mine aren't.... not even close, according to the research i did...

I had my CC set to 65. IT is an ambigeous rural interstate where the speed limit is (or should Be?) 65. The max speed I reached when I gave is some pedal was 72... he said I was doing 90... whats a town cop doing partolling the interstate anyhow????

Thats what I thought... anyhow I was running with my CB on, so I knew he was there, in traffic behind me... and that there was a highway patrol a mile or so ahead of me in the median.... so why in the world would i be speeding??? duh.... something is not right here... 90 would be flying, and my car doesn't have much left of it's original horses... it really really has to strain to get to 80....

ok, back to topic.... so... Your limiter kicks in when your speedo hits '120' even if you are doing like 90 as measured by a pacing car. correct?

I guess the question to ponder is if your car has an actual limiter at 119, or something like 89 or something??? It's rumored that all the luminas had limiters at 119, but I wonder if a base model prom ship would affect it?

I am about to test some extra prom chips I bought, one was from a 92 euro, and one was from a 90, to see if they affect the car's operation, or speedo reading....

The risk or using a prom chip from a junk car is that if it is configured incorrectly for you car, it might make it run bad..... (I wonder if I have this problem anyhow, seeing my car seems anemic anyways? Or maybe it's just 210k on a never rebuilt motor?)
