New transmission prices?

Alright.. blew out the transmission in a '97 GP GT today.. absolutly no gears work whatsoever... don't quite get how a transmission could go at 60K? Anyway.. somebody happen to know how far I'm gonna have to bend over on this one? I've never went thru trannys before, so I'd like to know what it's roughly gonna cost to have one installed before I tell the mechanic to have at 'er.

well, I know a new 4T60 for my car was $1100. So, Im assuming a 4T65 would be somewhere in that area just to purchase. Now, for the labor part, I really dont know. I mean, its a lot of work, but I bet its less than the labor on a rebuild. I would bet anywhere from $1400-$1800, for the entire job.

well when the tranny blew on my 94 GP it cost me $2800 for a rebuild. and thats with minimal damage to the gears. (as soon as it started shifting like crap i stopped and had it towed to the shop)

Not sure on your trans but on my 93 Cutty with the 3.1 I payed $1250 for a complete rebuild. My advice is be carefull with pricing. When my mom's Bravada needed a trans rebuild the price varried between $1200 and $4000!!! I normaly don't go with the cheapest but the $1200 guy came recomended and he did a great job. Lesson here I guess is paying more doesn't always mean getting more and in the world of trannies people try to bend you over all too often.

Abuse? I don't know... but I just don't get it and extremely curious on how you guys go thru trannies like I change my boxers every night. What's the scoop? Too many netrual drops; hot roddin' it every waking moment? ToastEm, you've been thru three of them? How's it possible? Not to start an arguement (I already know the weakness / weigh problem of the platform) but it's shocking how many 4T60's and a handful of 4T65's go out around here...

I would say go with a place that is known to do a good job. My grandpa had his tranny replaced (non W-body) by a shop and 5mos later it fell out while driving down the highway. Good thing they replaced it again for free.

Pretty sure this one went out due to abuse. It's got a red tag, and I know the guy that had it before didn't exactly take the best of care of it. (He's the guy that bought it salvage and repaired it) Yep so I'm marking this one off as abuse.

When getting a price estimate, know that newer model vehicles will be far more expensive than earlier models. For a current model tranny its around 2000+ to have it replaced(new trans, plus labor) shouldnt be more than 2800. If you goto one of the GM part websites you can search for transmissions and locate a part number. Call up multiple GM dealerships and get an estimate(they vary from several hundred dollars).

Good luck

I killed 5 4T60-E's in 2 and a half years. NO neutral drops. Just an occasional blast to redline, and 5 trips to the dragstrip (1/8th mile track, 2.36 60 foot times, all on street tires, no burnouts. fewer than 15 runs total)

No gears...Sounds like the diff might of blown up. Any chunks laying on the ground? Crawl underneath and check the passenger side case extension for any holes, chunks missing, or excessive trans fluid leaking all over (passenger axle shaft is attached to it), you can also see it from the passenger wheel well behind the splash guards.
