i am driving my car, and all of a sudden, the temp gauge goes up like the tach and back down again. up and down up and down, but theres no way the engine is that hot because i live in buffalo, its middle of winter and i just started the car and left.

now i get to where im going and i decide to check everything. all fluids are good except coolant. so i put it in to the line and left.

temp guage continues playing tricks, so i stopped and checked everything and sure enough if was EMPTY. in minutes just empty.

i dont know what to do about it but does any one know where it could be going if it is NOT leaking, and what steps to fix it?

You're totally sure you don't have a leak?

Make sure that you've bled all the air out of the system, that will play tricks with the sender

check that your heater core isn't leaking coolant.

Also, Make sure that you don't have coolant in the oil!

If do you see anything white when you lift up the oil cap (valve cover area)?

See pics below. If you do see anything close to below, PARK YOUR CAR IMMEDIATELY. You're going to end up changing both your Upper and Lower Intake Manifold gaskets. The pictures below show Dave's GP when the upper and lower intake gaskets went and let coolant into the engine.

My coolant started disappearing, so first I got it pressure tested (there wasn't really sign of it in the oil AT FIRST).

It started to go from the full line to the bottem of the reservior in 2 days (and that's only driving to work at back like 5km). Very soon I noticed the oil looked nasty, and it was time to change the lower intake gaskets. FWIW, the upper intake gasket didn't look THAT bad and I would have almost reused it but it was broken in one area...

How come when my intake gaskets went, the oil disappeared in a flash... the coolant stayed at its normal level?

Where did the oil go? Did it shoot out the sides where the RTV goes, or did it actually get sucked into the engine? That's weird!

If i had an external oil leak I probably wouldn't bother fixing it, unless it was REALLY severe that I had to add like every day or something..

my old engine had a tiny external leak. Of all the cars with the 3x00 that have come to my job (shop) all but 1 were external.

Where abouts does it leak on the gasket?

as usual at the coolant port, but on the other side. Mine dripped down the side of the head and down the block by the bellhousing.

I have no idea. I checked it before I ran across town.. just right. 1 hour and one haircut later, I started it and got teh LOW OIL. Thought WTF... I just bought this, must be a bad sensor. Turned it off.. restarted it.. light was still there. So I shut 'er off again, checked the oil and NOTHING registered on the stick. No oil on the ground, but the firewall and back side of the engine looked like an oil bomb went off. If an oil bomb exsisted, that is.

Wow what did the gasket look like???

I dunno.. I had it towed to a shop and gave 'em a check. I lived in an apartment at the time and had no place to do anything to it. All i remember them saying is that it was quite a disgusting ordeal?

wow thats horrid.

I think its funny how no one said anything about the water pump...

usually the bleeder starts to leak on them, and you lose a great amount of coolent...

Unless these cars are designed in an odd fasion and don't have that problem?
