birdman Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 where in the world is it? my book says how to test and replace it but dosnt say where it is besides the block?? thanks. Quote
GP1138 Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 Have fun. On a 3.1 it's relatively easy, but I'd hate to have to do it on a 3.4. It's on the passenger side of the block in the rear. It actually might be on the front on a 3.4 though, I don't know. Quote
birdman Posted January 26, 2006 Author Report Posted January 26, 2006 :bawl: does anyone know for sure?? ive gotta get this fixed soon. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 I've had to replace mine on my 3100. It's located above the oil filter on the L82...i'm not sure about the LQ1 tho. Btw, that might have something to do with your bad performance problem. Quote
joey b Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 yep, it is in the back. Near the middle, about halfway up. PITA to get to. It is just a metal cylinder about 3" in diameter and 1.5" long. Quote
digitaloutsider Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 I feel for the 4T60 guys who have to change that thing.. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 I tried to change mine back in the summer and gave up. It was throwing a knock sensor code for a while but it went away. I removed the alt cooling duct and could barely get my hand to touch it let alone use tools to replace it. I just had some transmission work done on it a month ago, so I bought a knock sensor and had the tranny shop stick it in while the tranny was out of it. The 4T60E makes it a bitch. I looked at my 284 Z34 and it looks way easier. Quote
5speedz34 Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 What about going in through the fender well? I would think if you move the alt out of the way getting to it from there shouldn't be too much of a problem. Â FWIW: The knock sensor code retards the shit out of the ignition timing making the car slow as piss. Quote
GOT2B GM Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 I know....as soon as the light came on, you could feel the car lose power. I just unplugged the sensor, plugged it back in, and it never came back. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 if you don't have it soved by the meet.............. Quote
birdman Posted January 27, 2006 Author Report Posted January 27, 2006 it seems to be kinda ok now but im still going to replace it, and the worse that will happen is ill get to the meet and it wont start so ill have to take the plugs out and air out the cylinders, but i will be there no matter what. so nobody has replaced one sucessfully? Quote
Prospeeder Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 you can rock the motor forward scince its in the rear??? Quote
digitaloutsider Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 so nobody has replaced one sucessfully?White93Z34 did it on his Euro 3.4. And Erik, where exactly are you going to rock the engine to? The LQ1 takes up a great deal of space inside that bay, and even if you got it to move forward at all, there's no method of holding it there. Lastly, how is rocking it going to help when the transmission is attached to the engine, and the transmission is what's in the way to begin with?! Quote
5speedz34 Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 The kid that owned Slicks car before him replaced it on the old motor. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 I've replaced it on the 3.1.... it is like 6 inches from the Crank sensor.... could you get access from the underside, or by dropping the frame??? Quote

And dont people rock the LQ1 for spark plug changes? Quote
birdman Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 do you think i could get to it if i took the passenger wheel and guards off??? Quote
Crazy K Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 no you cannot. but that how I read my tranny's tag... and that was difficult. and no space availible past that. Â But if you were able to crawl beneath the car.... Â That is how I changed my crank sensor on my lumina. Before I knew the engine could be tilted IIRC. Â I parked it with the right wheels on a curb and crawled beneath it. Â and since the knock sensor is close by... Quote
birdman Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 im confused, now the crank sensor is behind the crank pully right? and if the knock sensor is real close to it does that mean its on the right side of the motor because i was lead to belive that it was in the middle of the back of the motor. someone please clairify for me. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 actaully, there are two types of crank sensors or crank and cam sensors, or something...... the one I'm refering to would be right behind the alternator on a 3.4... Info, for the pic: http://www.misterfixit.com/crnksnsr.htm I'm told the alternator has to be removed fro that one to be changed, and I even took the knock sensor from a NOS, never installed 3.4 that was donated and scrapped at a tech school I went to... it is in the same spot as the 3.1, below the alternator on the rear of the engine. in fact..... i checked and it says the same location for a 92 lumina for the knock sensor, with 3.1 or 3.4 on: http://autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?UseCase=C001&UserAction=performSearch&Parameters=Auto+Store%7C%7ECOMPONENT+LOCATIONS%7C%7EKNOCK+SENSOR Quote
birdman Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 wow that really sucks, i guess im going to have to get creative on how to get to it. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 sucks? I'll help you do it in person next weekend in 5 minutes! Quote
birdman Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 if only it were that easy it might come down to that though so dont be supprised if you get handed some tools Quote
GOT2B GM Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Its not going to be as easy as you think..... Quote
