Badly knockin 3.1L

I recently sold my old winter beater to my cousin and of course it has to fail, but it's expected with him driving.

Anyway 270,000Kms and it has always had really low oil pressure when hot, worn bearings I assumed. Now, I've never heard an engine knock this bad and certainly not a 3.1L. It's so loud it's hard to tell which cylinder it is, but it is only one.

Anyone think that if we scabbed some new bearings in there could we maybe get some more life out of this thing or is that just a complete waste of time?

Just didn't want to get into swapping the motor out of that car unless absolutely necessary. The car is in overall really good shape minus the drivetrain. He doesn't want to spend much money on the car so thats why we're considering doing the bearings.

Thanks.

thats kinda a crap shot, you might have a messed up crank, but if you do replace the bearings at least replace the oil pump while your in there.

What about a thicker oil like 15w30 or something?

If its knocking that bad, I doubt oil weight will do anything at all.

Honestly, Id just replace the motor. yes its more work, but if the condition of the car is that good, a good healthy motor will make it last that much longer. Cuz running it with it knocking, who knows whats wrong and how much damage its causing.

I know the motor is toast and will need to be replaced but I've know that for a long time. Just want to know if new bearings will stretch it's life out a little till he can afford to buy another engine. Oil will do nothing for a spun bearing as no oil is getting through it.

Puttin new bearings in a motor thats "toast" , in my eyes, is a complete waste of time. Youll need a new motor and thats just time and money that you can put towards the new engine. Because theres a chance that the crankshaft is gonna be damaged and to get a new one would cost more than a replament engine. (depending on where you got the engine of course)

Be that as it may, it's neither my car nor my decision. We have acknowledged the fact this motor is fucked and needs to be replaced, which will be done when he has the money to do so. Sorry but not really looking for personal opinions about what the right thing to do is, I already know what that is.

I want to know if this thing might live a couple months longer with new bearings vs doing nothing at all, cause he's gonna drive it anyway? Bearings I already had for it so it's only his time and he has plenty of that.
