19Cutlass94 Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Tonight on my way home from work, my alt. was making a horrible whine sound, that laos sounded like a metal saw cutting metal, like that kind of grindingish noise. I know it was starting to go cuz it seems like everyday my voltage drops and is lower than the day before. The whine really isnt constant, but when it happens you can deffinatly hear it. How much longer do I have until it finally decides it wants to quit? Another question, I need to get a higher ampere alt. so can I have someone rebuilt it to a higher ampere, and if so how much? Thanks guys Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I would replace it before you get stranded... Quote
95oldsVan Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Id get it fixed asap. Its a time bomb waiting to fail on ya.Last time this to happened to one of my GM cars,I took it to an alternator repair shop and they checked it and everything passed, just needed new bearings and they put them in for 25 bucks.Do take your serpentine belt off and try spinning it by hand.If its very tough to spin and grinding, dont put off to much longer. As far as increasing your amperage,I dont know if shops can upgrade. If you need a brand new alternator, stick with an a/c delco unless someone has a better suggestion. Quote
mihela816 Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 You probably have less than a week before the alt goes. I rebuilt my alt with the iceberg conversion kit for 110 if I remember correctly. Ordinary kits are about $50. It is possible to rebuild to a higher output spec by replacing the stator. Quote
terryk2003 Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 I would replace it before you get stranded... :withstupid: ...but, if u find a higher amp alternator let me know!...mine died over the summer and my choice from the parts stores was 100amp or 105 amp...i opted for the 105 but i highly doubt that extra 5 amps helped...i was trying to stop my headlights from dimming when i push the brakes... Prospeeder Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 http://www.alternatorparts.com/cs130_&_cs130d_alt.htm highter amp models Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 22, 2006 Author Report Posted January 22, 2006 yeah I know its gonna go, but you can only hear the grindingish noise when you listen for it and are about 1 foot from it, but the whining it rather loud. But if I dont have any lights on, like today when I first started it up it was 14.0 but when I turned the lights on, it dropped to low 13's (before the whining happened) But its just a bad time for this, I mean yes I need a high amp alt. but not right now Prospeeder, Thanks for the link! Prospeeder Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Glad i could help, Yours should be the 1994-2000 Delco-Remy CS-130D Series Internal Regulator Alternator if you have the 3100 with the standard regulator hook up Quote
terryk2003 Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Glad i could help, Yours should be the 1994-2000 Delco-Remy CS-130DSeries Internal Regulator Alternator if you have the 3100 with the standard regulator hook up thats it...cause it says exactly what i said above The CS-130D alternator was introduced as the standard application for most GM vehicles. It came standard as 100 & 105 amp models Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 22, 2006 Author Report Posted January 22, 2006 yeah I was thinking it was that one. I have the 3100, but Im just figuring that I have the standard hook up. But will all of those just bolt into place or will I need brackets and such and have to worry about clearance? Quote
Prospeeder Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 oh, i didnt see that, we posted like, literally at the same time! Quote

Prospeeder Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 my dads silverado one went out not to long ago, it started howling and what not, took it about a month and then it started squeeking and the volts went all the way down and the truck barley got home, but didnt die Quote

If not, I know Ill have an interesting adventure thats why i still have a 105 amp...i couldnt afford or FIND the higher amp one @ the time and the alt was already dead on my car...i think i may just buy the kit and upgrade mine myself...i'm sure it isnt too hard... Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 22, 2006 Author Report Posted January 22, 2006 Im sure the kit cant be too awful hard. But Im prolly gonna go with the 170amp alt. Just so I know Ill have enough to run everything I need/want to. But if this one dies, Im out of commision for a while until I order that and it gets here. But atleast if you buy the kit, youll know more about alternators Quote
95oldsVan Posted January 22, 2006 Report Posted January 22, 2006 Anyone try to mod one of these to fit? Its the CS 144 model.I have one in my 95 Minivan. This alternator is also popular with the earlier C4 Corvette owners, that which their cars came with the older CS 130 or something, and they installed these to beat the problems of the unreliable smaller unit. Some grinding of a bracket or ear was required, but was otherwise was a very easy swap over. Heres a link to some info: http://www.alternatorparts.com/CS-144_Special_offer.htm Edit,I didnt realize pro already posted a similar link.Either way, hope you find what suits ya best. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 24, 2006 Author Report Posted January 24, 2006 haha as the days go by, it just gets louder, and just worse Quote
1990lumina Posted January 26, 2006 Report Posted January 26, 2006 The alternator in my dad's car has been grinding and whining since June....still is going...just sounds horrible...he's waiting till it finally dies Quote
chadz34 Posted January 27, 2006 Report Posted January 27, 2006 My Cavalier had that happen, I just said it was a Supercharger! Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 lol yeah but this is the weirdest thing ever guys! It was whining too bad it was like a s/c, but now when I hooekd up my amp cuz I finally got all my parts, and now the whine is gone? Whats goin on with this thing? Quote
Crazy K Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 Was this a whine heard through the speaker system???? I have had alternator whine when the radio was on, ever when turned down as low as it would go. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 I turned it radio off, all the way down at 00 volume and it still whined. because I took my one amp out before this whining and there was no noise then all of a sudden driving home from work one day it started. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 28, 2006 Report Posted January 28, 2006 ok. at least you have a 3.1. not hard to change. I could do it in about 10 minutes Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 28, 2006 Author Report Posted January 28, 2006 lol me too but the stb will take 5 more minutes to complete the job Quote
