GutlessSupreme
Approximately how much should parts for a bottom end rebuild cost, including rings, all bearings, freeze plugs, oil pump and I guess that's it. assuming rods and pistons are fine. '90 3.1. I know a full gasket set goes for around $150. Also, how much could I expect for head rebuilds to cost? cleaned, 3 angle valve job, etc. I'm not too good with heads so I don't know what kind of stuff needs to be replaced. I think I might just go all the way.
GutlessSupreme
And what's the difference between a Melling M95HV and a M95HVS3?

GutlessSupreme
I know, I'm going to bring everything in to make sure it's to spec. I'm going to have the heads rebuilt by a shop but everything on the block short of magnafluxing me and a buddy are going to do ourselves. Still wondering the difference on those oil pumps... sdwhite
What's wrong with it in the first place? This isn't just something you decide to do one weekend for the heck of it. I'd expect to spend $500 on the heads alone. I just had a machinist replace one valve and take .015 off of both and do a helicoil repair on one and it cost me $125. I do not believe you're going to be able to keep your original pistons. If the engine *needs* bottom end work, it's likely been in service long enough to have formed a ridge at the top of the cylinder That will have to be reamed before piston removal (so you don't break the piston). I'm sure the shop will suggest that you have it bored out .020-.030 which will require new pistons. Also, if it's been in service this long, it's unlikely that the crank will be fine with just new bearings and will probably need to be ground .010 under. $500 on heads, another $500 on pistons, gaskets, rings, etc. $200 to have the block bored & cleaned up (About $15-20 a cylinder, + labor). Don't know how much to grind crank. You'll also probably want to have the whole reciprocating assembly balanced, another $200-300.
