digitaloutsider Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 It took me hours to do TWO of my rims. I couldn't imagine doing that to crosslaces.. Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted January 19, 2006 Report Posted January 19, 2006 Black inserts w/ polished face and lip would be cool, it hasn't really been done yet. I think it would probably look best if you got some aluminum center caps (don't paint the black ones). Quote
Prospeeder Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Very cool, The reason it takes so long is the crosslaces on painted ones are very very poreus, has deep pores on it for the powder coat to stick, making it extremly time consuming. Quote
slick Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Aircraft stripper will eliminate whatever you have on your wheels, and take it down to bare metal. That might save you some time on the sanding part. Quote

That gold is tough as shit to get off, you can douse the things in aircraft stripper for an hour and it will take alot off, but i could not to save my life get them bare, it just wasnt going to happen, the gold stuck like a mofo Quote

92 GP Posted January 20, 2006 Author Report Posted January 20, 2006 Prospeeder is correct on the porous part. IIRC that's why someone once said that it was impossible. Â But yea, i picked up some A/C stripper, so that SHOULD help, but we'll see. It's actually kinda nice having the gold in the little spots, so i can see EXACTLY what needs to be sanded, etc etc. We'll see though. I'm pretty sold on the black inserts/polished face. Â I think where the actual mesh meets with the lip, if you guys have seen up close, there's like a 1/8" recession there, i might do that in black. It's only maybe 1/8-3/16" wide, so it'd be a nice touch to keep it from looking too blingy Quote

And since the top part of the wheel IS porous, i think it helped it absorb in there some more. It really can't just be stripped/polished. THere's no way around it, it HAS to be polished. If you've EVER seen a scuffed/sanded x-lace, you'll know why. Quote
92 GP Posted January 20, 2006 Author Report Posted January 20, 2006 oh for the centercaps, i'm gonna get one of the aluminum ones, like the ABS type that were on the bonnevilles or something Quote
92 GP Posted January 20, 2006 Author Report Posted January 20, 2006 or these wouldn't look too bad Quote
jeremy Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 those arrowhead ones should look pretty good, although I think they would be nicer with out the pontiac lettering.... Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 Go with the ABS ones. I just think the black in the center would be out of place with the rest of the wheel being shiney... Quote
92 GP Posted January 20, 2006 Author Report Posted January 20, 2006 Yea i was thinking about my black wheels, those centers would look good. Â For the polished one, i'm definately gonna get a set of the ABS aluminum capped ones, and polish'm up Quote

RPE wheels im not really sure, cause the face is smooth but i dunno if under the painted areas it is or not. Oh and white! So the powdercoat or what ever itself is a bitch to get off Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted January 20, 2006 Report Posted January 20, 2006 I clean my blue wheels with a brillo pad, and the paint is still perfect on them.... Quote
stockgp Posted January 23, 2006 Report Posted January 23, 2006 i still say pick up a cheap campbell hausfeld sandblaster from wal mart and go to town. i think i got mine and a bag of black beauty for 28 and change Quote
logikf1ve Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 I dont recommend sandblasting aluminum. Â It'll pit it so bad that your fingers will regret it. Quote
stockgp Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 yeah you're right. i didn't think about the fact that they are aluminum. :? Quote
logikf1ve Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 Believe me, I even thought about just about everything to get away from having to hand sand my WS6 snowflake rims for my T/A (same concept to the wheels) In the end, it was all elbow grease. Quote
stockgp Posted January 24, 2006 Report Posted January 24, 2006 i like the stripping/sanding/buffing attachments for my 4.5" angle grinder. got them all from http://www.eastwood.com Quote
92 GP Posted January 24, 2006 Author Report Posted January 24, 2006 Wound up with an angle die grind, as well as a couple attachments. It's coming along not too shabby Quote
92LuminaRS Posted January 31, 2006 Report Posted January 31, 2006 try sandblasting them first with a fine media, than go for the polishing, it might save you like 50 hours or so Quote
ApexAnalog Posted February 9, 2006 Report Posted February 9, 2006 Looks like a lot of work, but a cool look if you do it right. I am in the middle of paintin mine, so one side has no paint and sanded caps and the other side still has paint and black caps...looks totally stupid now, but should be cool when its done Quote
