Guest Anonymous Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I have been experiencing an infrequent stalling situation with my car (92 3.4L)... sometimes when i have to come to a quick stop, the car stalls out- Like if i missed the turn and hit the brakes real quick to slow down/stop, it will stall on me, or if i approach a stopsign to fast and hit the brakes suddenly, it will stall. It doesnt happen all the time, in fact rather rarely, maybe once a month (i dont drive it alot either, though). The previous owner had described a similar problem, also infrequent. I have not experienced any voltage problems (thank God!) but i do throw the 32 EGR code every once in a while. The car doesn't stutter, stagger, run rough, or anything like that when this occcurs... it just shuts off at the stop, and always starts right up. Any ideas? Other than that i don't have any complaints as to how its been running... But this has been baffling me. Its slight problem becuase once this happened while stopping and turning, and then i lost my power steering and couldn't steer throgh the turn. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Tranny downshifts late, maybe needs a filter change and flush, or low fuel presure... from a weak pump or just a sign to change your fuel filter. Quote
Guest Anonymous Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 well i have a new fuel filter and i think i had the fuel pump replaced as well... however i could not tell you the last time the tranny flush was done, i know i never did it. Quote
joey b Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 fuel injectors from 91 to 93 had a problem that caused the car to stall for no reason, or "phantom stalling" if you will. You will want to get some injectors from a 94+ model year. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 I forgot about that, they did have a phantom stall problem on the early 3.4s But if you haven't done the tranny you should anyhow. Quote
1990lumina Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 Do the phantom stalling applicable to both auto and manual trannys?? Quote
White93z34 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 when they put a new fuel pump in did they change the fuel filter as well? i'd start with that. what color is your trans fluid? and does it smell burnt? Quote
Robby1870 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 The IAC should have a big part in no throttle, slowing down, down shifting conditions. Quote

White93z34 Posted January 14, 2006 Report Posted January 14, 2006 i remeber hearing that myself that it was only on MT cars. that said, in the 2 years i've owned the z34, it has had a phantom stalling problem, however it really only hapiens once every few thousand miles and it always starts right back up after, so i've just learned to live with that. Guest Anonymous Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 Thats how mine is... is pretty infrequent so its one thing i dont want to mess with. Quote
skiiirt Posted January 15, 2006 Report Posted January 15, 2006 I have the exact same problem. I have had the fuel filter and pump replaced. I do believe I also have the later injectors (94+) It almost feels like a vacuum leak as I usually can tell it will stall right before it happens. Although I have had this car thoroughly checked for air leaks and shouldn't have any. Who knows. I just live with it Quote
Steve Williamson Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 I have a 93 lumina z34 with the 3.4 and its doing the same thing. If you find out the problem please let me know. I have checked for vaccum leaks changed map sensor, ignition module with coils, fuel filter and egr valve.Fuel pressure is 35psi. Its gotten better but it will still stall every 700 to 1000 miles. 92LuminaRS Posted February 11, 2006 Report Posted February 11, 2006 My '91 use to do that too when I hit the brakes REAL hard. It would jsut stall ad start up normally, but yes you loose your power assisted EVERYTHING which is kinda dangerous... It had a new fuel filter & pump and the tranny had new fluid and filter too... I just took it as a loss and tried not to hit the brakes too hard. And yes, it was the 3.1 Quote
joey b Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Hey steve-- fuel injectors from 91 to 93 had a problem that caused the car to stall for no reason, or "phantom stalling" if you will. You will want to get some injectors from a 94+ model year. Quote
Prospeeder Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 3.4 autos were the only ones with that problem...not 3.1s.... Quote
92LuminaRS Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 Tell that to my stupid ass lumina Quote
Prospeeder Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 3.1s usually have IAC problems when it comes to stalling at a stop Quote
92LuminaRS Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 That might be my issue than, huh? I'm just too lazy and dont care enough about the '91 to fix it Quote
Prospeeder Posted February 12, 2006 Report Posted February 12, 2006 just take the 2 bolts off that hold it on, and clean it with like brake cleaner and it should be fine Quote
joey b Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 3.4 manuals also had the problems with the injectors. Quote
GP1138 Posted February 13, 2006 Report Posted February 13, 2006 3.4 autos were the only ones with that problem...not 3.1s.... Actually, Mr. I Don't Own This Engine But I Can Sure Spread Misinformation About It, 3.4's mated to MTX's are the most infamous for that. Quote
