gsragtop Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Hey guys, I am new to this sight. I purchased a 2000 Impala LS about 3 month ago. From day one it had this problem, but I got good deal on it and I thoght it would be somthing simple. It has a vibration between 40-50MPH and again around 70 MPH. This vibration is only there while you are on the gas, or the motor is under load (going up a incline). If you take your foot off the gas at these speeds the vibration goes away and the ride is smooth. Down shifting the trans has no effect on this problem, so I dont think its a motor vibration. It does get worse with people in the car. So far I have replaced one of the lower motor mounts and a CV joint hoping to fix the problem. I am out of ideas. ANY HELP would be appriciated or else I am going to have to take it to the dealer. Just to recap: - No vibration while coasting, so I dont think its is a tire or wheel problem (2 tires are new, and they have been rotated with no change) - Does not change with a down shift. This tells me it is not a motor problem or a tranny problem such as a chattering torque converter. THANKS GUYS JOSH Quote
Regal_GS_1989 Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 How old are the plugs and Wires?? Also, check the ICM and the coil packs. Also, check the type of plugs that are in there. Regular ol' Delcos are the ones to use. No BOSCH!!! Quote
gsragtop Posted January 11, 2006 Author Report Posted January 11, 2006 Sorry I forgot to mention that I did a full tune up as well. The car runs 100% and gets 24-25 MPG even in the cold.. Its not a ignition problem that I can tell. Quote
Regal_GS_1989 Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Ahhh, that sounds exacly like my old regal. Under no load, it was perfect, but with passengers, or under load, it would buck like no tommorw. My ICM was bad, and when it would get humid, it would short out, and, as a result, did not send a stong enoguh signal to one of the coil packs. So under load, it was running on 4 cylinders. You say that you have already done a tune up?? I would be willing to bet on the ICM or a Coil pack Quote
gsragtop Posted January 11, 2006 Author Report Posted January 11, 2006 But if it was somthing like that it would throw a code, and the CEL would come on. This is an OBD2 car, so it would detect the missfire. I really dont think it is ignition, thats not what it feels like. It feels like a wheel is going to fall out. Just an all over vibration of the side to side variety. Keep the ideas coming.. Quote
Crazy K Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 have the rims been checked to be round? I've seen about half of j/y steel rims from gen 1s bent while looking for a set. Quote
R Dubya Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 I've seen that happen with bad cv joints before on a FWD car. Sometimes those tri-pots catch and will cause a random chatter, only under load. Quote
bluegp Posted January 12, 2006 Report Posted January 12, 2006 Sounds like what my Impala does. Mine has a vibration when you get on the gas moderate to hard. The vibration is amplified if the wheels are turned like when accelerating through a sweeping turn (more so when turning left that right). My front struts/strut mounts are shot, so I'm sure that doesn't help matters. I've done a little on-line reading - other culprits include axle shafts and wheel bearings. From what I've read, I guess the wheel bearings are notorious for going bad on these cars. Quote
gsragtop Posted January 12, 2006 Author Report Posted January 12, 2006 Yah Blue, that is the direction I am heading in (wheel berings). However on my car it does not seem to make a diff if I am turning or not. I did have a mechanic ask me that. I just hate to plug and play parts hopeing that it fixes the problem, but it looks like that is what im going to have to do. Quote
bluegp Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Well, I finally got new axle shafts installed. Better late than never. It feels like a completely different car now! Real smooth -- all of the vibrations are gone. I'm no longer afraid to give it gas through a corner. Although they weren't making noise, the CV joints were shot on the old ones. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 The person you might want to drop a PM to is DiscoStudd. IIRC, he had a similar problem with his Impala and figured it out. Quote

bluegp Posted November 29, 2006 Report Posted November 29, 2006 Did you also check the wheel bearings? I didn't notice anything obvious; I hope they last a while. Like I said, it drives great now (other than needing new struts). Quote
