i dunno whats going on. it just seems that my tranny pops into neutral when i go around left turns between 30-55 mph. only on left turns though. after i feel it kinda slug down i can give it gas and it just revs itself. anyone know what could be wrong?

also another question.

when i first start moving it seems like i have to give it alot of gas and it has to rev alot to get the car to move. does it the worst when it is cold. what could this be? anyone know? kinda feels like im in a manual when im sitting on a slope and its just rolling with the clutch.

HOLY DOUBLE POST BATMAN!!!

sounds like the fluid is sloshing due to low fluid. Or even a clogged filter or damaged O-ring on the filter neck in combination?

make sure the fluid is level is correct, and you might change the filter and fluid.... best thing to try

Its more than likely just low fluid. Mine did that for awile after a tranny flush, turns out the guy that did it left it two quarts low.

I've had that happen before as well. I agree with everyone else. That'd definately be where I'd look.

I'm skeptical about it being low fluid. Those symptoms are pretty much what my '89s tranny did when it needed rebuilt. Ask a mechanic at a tranny shop - IIRC, the guy at the shop here said something about when a certain something breaks, there's a shaft that can slide back & forth when cornering that will cause the tranny to go into neutral (sorry for the vagueness, but I can't remember the specifics).

Mine has a new filter and oil, i changed it since it was doing the same thing, plus some other stuff, it didnt fix it, i asked a mechanic, he said that a shaft was being pulled and no traction was being sent to the cv's, somthing like what BLUEGP said. It sounds reasonable tho, since the weight of the car is too much at those speeds, something must be pulling.

I had a 1992 Z-24 that started doing that. The next week the torque converter blew. Cost me around $1700 to get the tranny and everything rebuilt by Aamco.

That's the only tranny that I ever blew.

  • 2 weeks later...

My car just started doing this after I redid my cam timing. Before that, it had no problems. Could a vacuum line being knocked off or something having to do with the intake maniflol have this exact same effect?

Sounds like his TC is slipping alot and possibly worn or bad clutch packs as well.

Btw,that aamco special is expensive.I used to live in NY and FWD trannies were around 2000-2500 rebuilt.I moved to KY and had a 4T60E rebuilt for 850 bucks at the local tranny shop. The rebuild kit was around 175 bucks or so they charged and the rest was labor. If you can pull a tranny yourself, the shops will rebuild them if you drop it off for around 250-300 or so,depending on what hard parts may need replacing.

Most transmission shops get their rebuild kits for under 200 bucks with the rebuilt torque converter. Then you get charged say 2000 bucks with parts and labor. If labor is say 75 an hour,it doesnt add up.

Cost of living, wages, shop overhead, insurance and locations have driven up prices really high for transmission rebuilds.Which is why I got a far better deal down here than I did up north. But dang,I cannot see spending more than 1,000 bucks a transmission rebuild if you look at the cost of the kit to YOU plus labor. Are they charging 100-150 an hour up North these days?

Sorry to Hijack the thread somewhat, was just curious about the costs and etc of potential transmission rebuilds relating to the subject posted.
