19Cutlass94 Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Ok well everyone knows about the famous lift tick at idle right? well when Im driving, between the RPM range of 1500 to about 3000, it sounds like the lifter tick but deifferent for the obvious reason that Im driving it. But if it possible that its the lifters thats making this noise? It doesnt happen all the time. Im lost as to what it is, and I wanna try to get it figured out now, before I tear into my engine to replace gaskets... anyone have an idea? Quote
1990lumina Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 My 3.1 MPFI does that too...I've been told it's relatively normal and won't hurt anything. Quote
19Cutlass94 Posted January 11, 2006 Author Report Posted January 11, 2006 its pisses me off to no end! when Im driving I really cant stand listening to that! Would some aftermarket lifters take care of this or am I stuck with it forever? Quote
THe_DeTAiL3R Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Yeah my engine does the same sound, at the same RPMs. At low RPM or WOT the noise goes away. Quote
94CutlassXtreme Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 It's actually not the lifters, it's piston slap. It's caused by a little to much piston pin clearance. The was a recall, and from what I've heard GM released a TSB with some new part #'s to cure the problem. But it still doesn't hurt anything, it's just annoying as all hell. Quote
Intlcutlass Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Mine does that if I have run the car, then let it sit for an hour, THEN go and start it again... It's loud, and I thought I had a lifter tak'n a shit. I still don't understand how it could be piston pin clearance. That doesn't sound like it would ever go away, but after a few min of running (I have been affraid to go WOT), it does in fact go away. I assumed it was until oil pressure built up some..... Quote
94CutlassXtreme Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 Oil pressure has some to do with it going away. Metal expands when it heats up, so the clearance is a little less. Thats why it gets quieter. Quote
SigEpCutlass Posted January 11, 2006 Report Posted January 11, 2006 I have this problem randomly at times too. Same year same engine...gg GM Quote
