Hayes Performance Plus
Hey Everyone, I Thought I'd mention that if there was someone that needs a shop to remove the Powermaster III ABS brakes and replace them with the regular power brake system that our shop does that service. Best regards to all, David Hayes President of HAYES PERFORMANCE PLUS (Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA)

Hayes Performance Plus
Yes, they did. Optional in 1991 and standard equipment in 1992 EXCEPT the regular Lumina coupe/sedan. From then on till there end the Powermaster III became standard on all. David

The PMIII was a non-vacuum based brake system... which utilized electric power to generate hydraulic assist. I believe that you may be refering to the brake system called ABS IV. I heard that The PMIII was not legal for sale/use in canada... as it doesn't meet your DOT type requirements. IIRC (in america) luminas didn't have abs availible in 91. but they did have abs on 92 euros, but not base models in 92. Unless GM of canada called the system PMIII? If the abs was diabled, it should work like regualr brakes... excluding critcal sytem failures, that is.
Hayes Performance Plus
I'm Talking PMIII. YES, IT IS A NON-VACUUM BASED BRAKE SYSTEM and there are MANY W-body cars in Canada with them! Remember Many of these cars in Canada were built in the states. I have all the original equipment books and sales brochures for USA AND CANADA. And NO if the ABS is disable WITH a PMIII system it does not work as a normal brake system. Our shop has been working with them since they were built. I personally know guys at GM. A couple of problems you will have over time and at present is the way there disigned is to put a VERY VERY high percentage of your braking power to the front brakes only, in "limp" mode , when the PMIII isn't working or is disable. Second, One of the many problems that GM had with The PMIII is that the pressure supply to the unit continully over the years drops and diminishes. THAT IS WHY all new brake system since then have been disigned with a traditional "Vacuum Booster" with the ABS Unit Placed into the lines. The Problems that where ABS related droped like a rock and were VERY few after the Powermaster III was ENDED I'm not here to argue, so don't take offence by what I stated. Unless you do this type of work day after day its hard to know the fact about anything, wiether its a car, plane, computer or whatever. I have owned many cars with the PMIII personally. I know the hell they can be. IF YOURS WORKS, GREAT!!!!!!!! TAKE VERY GOOD CARE OF IT OR IT WILL BRAKE YOUR BANK!

I didn't mention it... But I researched the Hollander interchange when i was debating about the one in my convertable. No Luminas were equipped. but the other three models, through 91 only, were. Again there is the possibilty that it may be that the info i have Doesn't include canada only models(produced for and for use only in or something like that). If i'm gonna believe it I wanna see pics.
Prospeeder
I find theres nothing wrong with the PMIII, just change the accumulator when it fails every 3-5 years and drain out and put clean fluid in it 1-2 years
Hayes Performance Plus
In regards to the years in which they where produced doesn't matter to me. If your right or I am i don't care. That isn't WHY I posted this. IF YOUR PMIII WORKS GREAT AND YOUR HAPPY WITH THEN I'M HAPPY TOO!!!! WAY TO GO. I know MANY over the year that dis-like the PMIII or in general JUST DO NOT WANT ANY ABS on there car. I DID NOT POST THIS FOR THE PURPOSE OF SOME BIG DEBATE OR TO HAVE A FIGHT. Hey We ALL LOVE W-Bodies lets leave it at that. I have customers that are Car lovers or even race car drivers that don't want the ABS in there car AT ALL!!!!! and even want to drop the small amount of weight it adds (in some cars the ABS is A LOT of weight) If You WANT It Removed WE DO IT! If You LOVE THE ABS AND DON'T WANT IT REMOVE, WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!!! NO WORRIES!!!!!!!!! Best Regards To ALL, David Hayes
Crazy K
Hey I did this conversion myself! I'm all for it! Just questioning the facts presented. On mine I retrofitted the aforementioned ABS IV system. While it is not functional yet, once it is, I can disable the system at any time if I want or need to. What is the cost for your service and what parts are you installing?

Prospeeder
Im not having it done, But i was curious if your replacing all the rear brake lines also? because they are one line and uses a porportioning (sp?) valve and the vacuum brakes use 2 seperate lines to the back. And the firewall issue also, do you replace that? or have a mounting adapter. Are you optionally putting an ABS VI in?

Hayes Performance Plus
I remove the old lines, Harness, Computer, Relay boxes, and EVERYTHING! The whole original ABS PMIII harness is Huge once you have it out. I Replace ALL lines and make a Thick Galvanized Steel adapter plate that bolts into place. We install different rear lines to match the new steel lines too. I use the same Master and power booster found on the non-ABS W-body Cars. There many smaller modifications that need to be done. Prices vary greatly depending on wiether they want ALL NEW parts or some used and some new, Or If we powder coat or chrome plate the booster, Polish or paint the master, and so forth. We do high-end work and do lots of work on show cars, hot rods, etc so don't expect some red neck job done. IF A PERSON IS SERIOUS I CAN GIVE THEM A ESTIMATE WHEN WE GET BACK. I am leaving day after tomorrow in the morning. In regards to installing the ABS VI, that is something I had thought of doing but I have HONESTLY not yet had one of our customers want it done. They wanted the ABS REMOVED. If Someone WAS SERIOUS I would figure out the details to have it done for them.
