f_399
Where can i find a good writeup on replacing the intake and head gaskets that commonly fail on the 3100?
Supreme Cutlass
I'd just buy a used dealership service manual
SigEpCutlass
i'll look tonight at my Haynes manual to see if that's any good. If it looks good, I'll digitally scan it in the coper @ work tomorrow for you if you'd like. Just let me know.
THe_DeTAiL3R
Haynes manual has a decent writeup on doing the LIM gaskets. Headgaskets aren't a common problem with the 3100s.... Basically just drain the coolant, tilt the engine, unbolt the coil pack/alternator/PS pump, remove front plug wires (rear can stay), take off some coolant hoses and stuff. Pretty straightforward just time consuming. Should be 10ft/lb torque spec for the lower intake bolts if you buy the GM ones. You will need a torque wrench as far as "special" tools go, the rest just hand tools.
SigEpCutlass
I agree with Dave after reading it last night, but he'd know better than I would. Ya know since he's sorta done it. Sorry, I forgot the fucking book in my room today...let me know if you want it scanned.

THe_DeTAiL3R
anything else i should replace since i am already there? Oil Pump Drive O-Ring. http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=16325 I read through that and kinda scratched my head maybe it's different engine? Anyways see the round thing at the bottem of the pic (has coolant on it) remove that 1 bolt to take the top piece off, then pull the sucker UP. It's kinda big so it takes a little bit of effort. You'll probably need an adjustable wrench to tug it out.
Crazy K
Basically, it is the same on all the engines. 2.8, 3.1, 3100... 3.4 (head interferes! fun!)

f_399
it was the right ones but somehow it would not fit..... went to oreilly and autozone 96mcls can better explain, he will be getting gaskets from gm and he will install it this coming weekend
jeremy
well at least the person working on it was smart enough not to half-ass the repair...

GP1138
That's why I didn't want to get Fel-Pro. I got GM just because I knew I could trust it.
96mcls
one of the little dowel pin things were too fat. i could only get it to go like half way in, and i really didn't want to press to hard and break the plastic. we tried scraping a little off with a razor blade, but having a razor that close to a already problematic gasket was just asking for trouble
THe_DeTAiL3R
There are at least 2 different versions of intake gasket for the 3100. From 94-99? there were 2 styles I know that for sure. The early 3100s (like mine) had no pushrod guides, aside from that they look the same (there might be other difference I didn't take it out of the package to compare that closely). late 95 and 96+ and up got the pushrod guides, I'm not sure if 00+? got another design. 96mcls
yeah, f 399's car needs the ones with pushrod guides. we compared the two at o reillys and the one W/O guides looks like the dowel pin will work, but it's just they don't have the pushrod guides. i noticed some of the cars with out the guides on the gasket had a little metal bracket bolted to the head with the push rod guides
