stockgp Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 finally. she's been considering getting rid of her 02 hyundai elantra for a while now, and i finally talked her into it. not for any real reason other than it's a 300 dolar car payment and one of her friends offered her a 95 lumina for 800 bucks. it's a gray 4 door, column shifted, 60/40 split buckets if i remember correctly. so yeah, she'll be picking it up in the next week or so. all i know about it so far is that it has had at least on ehead gasket replaced. anything else i should look for? no matter what she's getting the car. if nothinf, i'll buy another 3100 top end and replace all the gaskets. then i'll use the other intake for my car oh last thing. i installed a lumina cd player into this car a while ago, like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CD-player-Chevy-Monte-Carlo-Camaro-Lumina-S-10-Cavalier_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38641QQitemZ8025471434QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW it has an auxiliary button i assume for a cd changer. could i hook up an xm receiver to it? i figure i'll look at the wiring diagrams and see what i can figure out. just thought i'd check to see if anyone had done it Quote
Crazy K Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 The 97 malibu had an external tape deck that hooks up to this radio. I will look up more info later I'm going to bed.... but if you get the malibu Tapedeck and attach it you can buy an auxilary adapter for like $60 that created an auxilary input that you can hook into anything. I just bought two of these exact radios today as well as external tape decks to go with them... PM me if you need more info. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 That radio is the optional "upgrade" for the 95-01 Loomies, and yes you can hook up an auxillary adapter to the 9-pin port on the back. The SCV should work with your car, provided the wire is run from the VSS to the radio harness (if it has the cassette version of that same stereo, then it will have the wire there.) Just so you know, the port on the back will only work with the optional tape deck, and not with a Delco CD changer. Installer dot com sells the aux input adapter (GM9-AUX.) http://www.installer-data.com/item/display_item.php?it=gm9-aux Now on to the rest of the car. I had exactly 3 problems with my 96 Loomie in the 2 years I owned it. 1.) Fuel pump relay became corroded slightly on the terminals. The fix? Sand down the contacts of the relay, bend them out slightly, and reinstall. 2.) Signal switch took a shit. Left signal flashed like it was on crack, and the lower brake lights wouldn't light up. It inspired me to do a write-up on how to change the switch out. 3.) Coilpack for cylinders 1/4 took a shit, causing "random cylinder misfires." I went overboard and replaced the whole ICM/coil assembly and it solved the problem... Quote
stockgp Posted January 3, 2006 Author Report Posted January 3, 2006 scv? vss? what's the scv and why does the radio have a speed sensor feed? and the car had a tape deck, but not that one. it was like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/98-CHEVY-S10-15-AM-FM-RADIO-CASSETTE-PLAYER-FACTORY-UM6_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ38639QQitemZ8027140787QQrdZ1 i don't care about the cd changer, that's just what i figured the aux butto was for. so that 70 dollar adapter will let me plug in the satellite receiver into the head unit? damn...seems like a lot of money to dump into something i'll never use. i can make a harness myself, but where can i get the rca adapter like that? Quote
ToroToro Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 SCV=speed compensated volume....turns the radio up as the car goes faster to compensate for road noise. That would be why it needs a speed sensor feed. Quote
stockgp Posted January 3, 2006 Author Report Posted January 3, 2006 yeah i thought of that a few minutes ago. i've had a few aftermaket hus with that feature, but i didn't figure an odl busted lumina would get it Quote
DiscoStudd Posted January 3, 2006 Report Posted January 3, 2006 Well you don't have to get the Aux input adapter. You could always leave the stock tape deck in there and use the cassette adapter to play the satellite radio. It will sound decent enough, but there will be a whole mess of wires cluttering up the dash. If you're taking that old stereo out, you should loosen the 2 bolts that hold the steering column to the dash so you can lower the column an inch or so. You'll need the extra wiggle room when trying to get the dash housing out to replace the stereo. It's even more of a pain in the ass trying to wiggle the housing back into place due to the "pocket" that resides underneath the headlight switch... Quote
stockgp Posted January 3, 2006 Author Report Posted January 3, 2006 the stock tape deck is long gone. i replaced it with the cd player months ago. Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Not to derail, but would I be able to use this for iPod use? That would rock.. I have a 96 Monte deck here and would like to use it.. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Not to derail, but would I be able to use this for iPod use? That would rock.. I have a 96 Monte deck here and would like to use it..Yep... Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Okay, the more pressing question: Can I use the iPod Dock connector on it to send the audio into the unit? I dont want the "Wire Jungle" sticking out of my dash.. EDIT: NVM.. Been readin around on that site.. Looks very possible! Now, I wonder how well I can get a 2 sub, 8 speaker setup to sound using a stock deck.. Quote
DiscoStudd Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 Does said dock connector have a set of RCA's (like the Delphi and Pioneer XM portables) ? The Aux input adapter will convert anything with RCA's to work with the mid to late 90's Chevy and Pontiac HU's. With an XM, you're looking at 3 wires, tops (antenna, power, and RCA's) so with an iPod, there should only be 2. If you keep the "run" short, wrap the cables with wire loom, and run them behind the dock, then you'll barely notice them. Grab up one of those PanaVise mounting brackets that bolts up next to the HU and your "run" of wires will be really short... Quote
Dirty Rockstar Posted January 4, 2006 Report Posted January 4, 2006 iPod specific things Here is what I was thinking.. Scroll down to the pic of the Gen3 iPod, and you'll see something like "Even Hotter".. It is the IPOD2CAR thing, and by just reading it, it looks like this is exactly what I want.. Quote
jeremy Posted January 5, 2006 Report Posted January 5, 2006 stockgp, do you have any pics of this ride yet? Quote
stockgp Posted January 5, 2006 Author Report Posted January 5, 2006 no. my mom hasn't even bought it yet. the lady selling it is in the hospital, and her sister is supposed to be looking for the title for us. Quote
stockgp Posted January 9, 2006 Author Report Posted January 9, 2006 we're going to pick up the car now. if the sun comes out a little, i'll have pics up in a few hours. Quote
f_399 Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 can you connect rca's directly to the back or is there an adaptor? i would like to buy one, i can use my steering buttons again Quote
logikf1ve Posted January 9, 2006 Report Posted January 9, 2006 That radio is the optional "upgrade" for the 95-01 Loomies, and yes you can hook up an auxillary adapter to the 9-pin port on the back. The SCV should work with your car, provided the wire is run from the VSS to the radio harness (if it has the cassette version of that same stereo, then it will have the wire there.) Also not intending to hijack, but you're saying if the car came with the base AM/FM player (without cassette) it would not have this wire? Is it hard to run and where would it go? Quote
stockgp Posted January 9, 2006 Author Report Posted January 9, 2006 some pics. the engine bay is filthy, but it runs well. interior needs a claeaning, but it's ok. baseball-size dent on the driver's front door and a crack in the rear bumper. everything else is great. NO peeling paint Quote
stockgp Posted January 9, 2006 Author Report Posted January 9, 2006 gor 800 bucks i think ti'sa good deal. i want to try and get a center console for it, but my mom doesn't want me to go to the trouble of switching it to floor shifter. so i guess i'm going to try to get one out of an s10 or sometrhing and see if i can get it to fit. Quote
1990lumina Posted January 10, 2006 Report Posted January 10, 2006 Wow you even have all the HVAC knobs on it Quote
stockgp Posted January 10, 2006 Author Report Posted January 10, 2006 well even if not, i can get a ton of them Quote
stockgp Posted January 10, 2006 Author Report Posted January 10, 2006 well here are the problems so far: neither of the cooling fans seem to work. i'm going to take a look ate the wiring diagrams and poke around with it a little. if need be i'll wire in seperate relays for both; the passenger rear sidemarker isn't getting any voltage. i don't have my multimeter, so i'll have to figure out another way to track down the problem; the drivers front caliper is frozen. only one pisten is frozen, though. i've never had that happen; i'm thinking the lower intake gasket might be going. there was some sludgy sruff in the oil cap like in zack's (ToroToro) http://www.w-body.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=37136 . mostly minor stuff, but i'm worried about the intake gasket. i'm really not going to have time to replace them until maybe spring. is that probably what the problem is?
