LukeZ34 Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 Need some help/advice here guys.. My neighbor/landlord was having problems with his 88 Cutlass International w/ a 2.8. The car only has 84K miles, but it's got some issues. He approached me yesterday asking me if I knew what the problem was. On a warm motor, the car stalls right after it's started. If he revs the car up right after it's started, it'll stay running for a while, but will eventually stall again. On a cold motor the car starts and idles but then eventually stalls. Any idea what it could be? I think the car just needs a good tuneup. But any advice is appreciated. Quote
Robby1870 Posted March 16, 2003 Report Posted March 16, 2003 When I broke the vacuum line on my MAP sensor it did the same thing, once it warmed up, around 170 or 175* it would die and then not restart. But, in '88 they didnt have a MAP, they had MAF, right?? So.......Check the MAF sensor and its connections and see what that does. First, though, check for trouble codes. Robby Quote
gimp19 Posted March 17, 2003 Report Posted March 17, 2003 When my maf went my check engine light went on and my car would stumble at constant speed's with cruise on. You can check a maf sensor by tapping the rectangle part where the wire's connect with the handle of a screw driver. If the engine stumbles/starts idling rough then the maf is bad. Quote
JS91Z34 Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 Hey that sounds like mine seriously!!!!!!!!!!!! Check that fuel pressure and see if it drops gradually like mine. My fuel pump is bad but it still works, It just dont idle very long. The check valve in the pump itself is bad. Its not letting pressure build while the car is at idle, instead it bleeds off and dies when warm and stalls immediately when cold. the :fruity: :gone2far: :yikes: Quote
Intlcutlass Posted March 18, 2003 Report Posted March 18, 2003 It sounds like the fuel press reg. It's def a fuel problem... 1) Start the car, let it run for a min or two. 2) Open the hood 3) Turn the car off 4) on the throttlebody, if you are standing on the driverside of the car looking at the tb, unplug the left most black vacume line, and wait a min or two. If fuel starts coming out of it, the the problem is the regulator. This was how I found my problem anyway. Good luck!!!!!! Quote
